While accountability is increasingly discussed as a privacy principle, it is far from clear how to achieve privacy protection through accountability. Moreover, it is even unclear how to define accountability in this context. This paper provides a conceptualization of accountability for the context of privacy protection based upon a review of the literature. The presented literature review aims at identifying a minimal core of accountability for the context of privacy protection to provide a foundation for requirements analysis for accountability-centric privacy protection mechanisms.

Protection of today’s interconnected and complex information infrastructures is of high priority. Traditionally, protection means robustness: preventively identify the threats to business processes and propose countermeasures within the context of a risk analysis. This, however, only covers known risks having punctual effects upon the IT infrastructure. In contrast, the notion of resilience, as a refinement of trustworthiness, is getting attention both in academia and within organizations as a denominator to move beyond survival and even prosper in the face of adverse conditions. This paper reports on ongoing work towards the development of PREDEC, a detective framework to realize resilience in the context of business processes. Specifically, it firstly motivates the need for operational resilience and corresponding tool support at the level of processes. Secondly, it sketches the operation and building blocks of PREDEC, which currently employs process mining techniques to analyze process event logs to assess systems’ resilience. Finally, it describes the intended evaluation steps to be undertaken once PREDEC is completely implemented.

Video surveillance is an omnipresent phenomenon in today’s metropolitan life. Mainly intended to solve crimes, to prevent them by realtime-monitoring or simply as a deterrent, video surveillance has also become interesting in economical contexts; e.g. to create customer profiles and analyse patterns of their shopping behaviour. The extensive use of video surveillance is challenged by legal claims and societal norms like not putting everybody under generalised suspicion or not recording people without their consent. In this work we propose a technological solution to balance the positive and negative effects of video surveillance. With automatic image recognition algorithms on the rise, we suggest to use that technology to not just automatically identify people but blacken their images. This blackening is done with a cryptographic procedure allowing to revoke it with an appropriate key. Many of the legal and ethical objections to video surveillance could thereby be accommodated. In commercial scenarios, the operator of a customer profiling program could offer enticements for voluntarily renouncing one’s anonymity. Customers could e.g. wear a small infrared LED to signal their agreement to being tracked. After explaining the implementation details, this work outlines a multidisciplinary discussion incorporating an economic, ethical and legal viewpoint.
