Ocio y recreación en América Latina: conceptos, abordajes y posibilidades de resignificación

Rodrigo Elizalde; Christianne Luce Gomes

This article was compiled from a bibliographic review and aims to: analyze what a concept is; present the two main approaches by which leisure and recreation are understood in Latin America, expanding thus the possibilities for new meanings to these concepts; and discuss the alternatives that these concepts -from a new perspective- can provide to the construction of participative, solidary and sustainable societies. In conclusion, its emphasized that most of the concepts of leisure and recreation widespread in Latin America , were formulated in other contexts, showing to be insufficient and inappropriate to the problems, contradictions and potentialities of this region. That is why they need new approaches and resignificances. Understanding leisure as a dimension of culture outlines the need to promote a critical/creative education by and for a non-hegemonic leisure, which rescues and appreciates cultural diversity as one of the key elements for social transformation. This article was compiled from a bibliographic review and aims to: analyze what a concept is; present the two main approaches by which leisure and recreation are understood in Latin America, expanding thus the possibilities for new meanings to these concepts; and discuss the alternatives that these concepts -from a new perspectivecan provide to the construction of participative, solidary and sustainable societies. Leisure in Latin America: A Conceptual Analysis

Christianne Luce Gomes

This chapter evolved from more extensive research into the concept of leisure in Latin America. Its aim is to carry out a conceptual discussion of leisure in this context. With this in mind, the understandings of 25 professors, professionals, and students linked to five master’s degrees in leisure/free time/recreation, undertaken in four Latin American countries (Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico), were canvased. The elements employed by the authors studied and by the interviewees of the research to conceptualize leisure in Mexico, in Costa Rica, in Ecuador, and in Brazil were variable and distinct. The theoretical bases and authors used to ground the comprehensions of leisure in each country were also different, but it was possible to observe points of contact.

Recreation and leisure in current Latin American societies

Christianne Luce Gomes

The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of leisure and recreation in current Latin American societies from the point of view of specialists in these subjects. The methodology involved a literature review and interviews with 25 lecturers, professionals and students linked to five master programs in the area of recreation, free time and leisure located in four Latin American countries: Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Mexico. The considerations of the respondents were highly diverse and indicate the importance of reviewing the usual way of conceptualizing leisure and recreation mainly in relation to work. This aspect was present transversally in different interviews. The preparation of professionals in the field of recreation and leisure needs to consider the challenge of critical thinking in order to find alternatives to the serious social problems within Latin American societies, something that is becoming ever more urgent and necessary. The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of leisure and recreation in current Latin American societies from the point of view of specialists in these subjects.
