Phylogeographic history of the swallowtail Papilio bianor Cramer (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) from China

Lixin Zhu; Xiaobing Wu; Chunsheng Wu

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in Papilio bianor Cramer from its extant range was evaluated to provide a phylogeographic history of its populations from China. Molecular variation in a 655 bp section of COII from 128 individuals (22 populations) was analysed, and 17 haplotypes were detected. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the presence of three major lineages, northeastern, southwestern and central lineages. The sequence divergence suggests that these regions had been isolated since the early Pleistocene. Nested clade, coalescent and genetic structure analyses indicate that allopatric fragmentation might be the cause of the deep divergence within the species. This period of allopatry was followed by contiguous range expansion, presumably involving recolonisation of formerly glaciated or uninhabitable areas from at least three refuges.

A review of the genus Elophila Hübner, 1822 in China (Lepidoptera: Crambidae: Acentropinae)

Fuqiang Chen; Chunsheng Wu; Dayong Xue

Fifteen species of the genus Elophila Hübner are recognised from China, including two new species described herein, namely E. radiospinula and E. nuda. The species E. melagynalis (Agassiz, 1978) from Fujian Province was a misidentification of Thysanoidma octalis Hampson, 1891 and its record in China is abolished. The species E. manilensis (Hampson, 1917), E. orientalis (Filipjev, 1933) and E. miurai Yoshiyasu, 1985 are reported for the first time in China. Descriptions of the genus and subgenera and a key to the Chinese species of Elophila are provided. The adults and the genital structures of all examined species are illustrated.

Review of Cania (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae) from China

Chunsheng Wu; Chenglai Fang

Abstract Nine species of the genus Cania Walker are known from China, including the four new species described herein, namely C. pseudorobusta, C. pseudobilinea, C. xizangensis and C. polyhelixa. The three species, C. javana Holloway, C. bandura acutivalva Holloway and C. siamensis Tams, are new records from China. These are illustrated including the genitalia. A key to the Chinese species is also provided.

A review of the genus Patissa Moore in China (Lepidoptera: Crambidae: Schoenobiinae)

Fuqiang Chen; Shimei Song; Chunsheng Wu

Abstract Three species of Patissa Moore are recognized from China, including one new species, Patissa tenuousa, sp. nov. Patissa minima Inoue is reported from China for the first time. The Chinese species are keyed and redescribed. Adults and genital structures of new species are illustrated. The type of new species and other specimens examined are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, P. R. China.

A review of the genus Paracymoriza Warren in China (Lepidoptera: Crambidae: Acentropinae)

Fuqiang Chen; Shimei Song; Chunsheng Wu

Abstract Twenty species of the genus Paracymoriza Warren, 1890 are recognised from China, including four new species described herein, namely P. concava, P. pseudovagalis, P. truncata, and P. albimaculata. The species P. albalis Yoshiyasu, 1987 and P. rivularis (Moore, 1888) are reported for the first time in China. The multispinea group (with the single species P. multispinea) is withdrawn and P. multispinea is transferred to the prodigalis group. A key to the Chinese species of Paracymoriza is provided. The adults of the new species and the genital structures of all examined species are illustrated.

A review of genus Cirrhochrista Lederer in China (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae: Schoenobiinae)

Fuqiang Chen; Shimei Song; Chunsheng Wu

Abstract Eight species of Cirrhochrista Lederer are recognized from China, of which C. spinuella and C. fuscusa are new to science. C. semibrunnea Hampson is reported for the first time from China. A key to the Chinese species and redescriptions of the genital structures of the known species are given. On the basis of the female genitalia, three species groups are established, viz., brizoalis-group, kosemponialis-group and tspissalis-group. The adults and genital structures of the new species are illustrated. The type specimens of the new species are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.

A review of Rhamnosa from China (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae)

Chunsheng Wu; Chenglai Fang

Abstract Eight species of the genus Rhamnosa Fixsen are recognized from China, including two new species, R. bifurcivalva and R. uniformoides, described herein. These have been illustrated including genitalic characters. A key to the Chinese species is also provided.

A REVIEW OF THE GENUS ARCHISCHOENOBIUS SPEIDEL IN CHINA (LEPIDOPTERA: CRAMBIDAE: SCHOENOBIINAE) ∗

Fuqiang Chen; Shimei Song; Chunsheng Wu

Abstract Four species of Archischoenobius Speidel are recognized from China, including three new species, A. nigrolepis, sp. nov., A. nanlingensis, sp. nov., and A. minumus, sp. nov. described in this paper. A key to the Chinese species is provided. Adults and genital structures of all species are illustrated. The types of new species and other specimens examined are deposited in the Institute of Zoology (IOZ), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, P. R. China.
