Neurocognitive correlates of liberalism and conservatism

Political scientists and psychologists have noted that, on average, conservatives show more structured and persistent cognitive styles, whereas liberals are more responsive to informational complexity, ambiguity and novelty. We tested the hypothesis that these profiles relate to differences in general neurocognitive functioning using event-related potentials, and found that greater liberalism was associated with stronger conflict-related anterior cingulate activity, suggesting greater neurocognitive sensitivity to cues for altering a habitual response pattern.

Social Cognition in Schizophrenia, Part 1: Performance Across Phase of Illness

Social cognitive impairments are consistently reported in schizophrenia and are associated with functional outcome. We currently know very little about whether these impairments are stable over the course of illness. In the current study, 3 different aspects of social cognition were assessed (emotion processing, Theory of Mind [ToM], and social relationship perception) at 3 distinct developmental phases of illness: prodromal, first episode, and chronic. In this cross-sectional study, participants included 50 individuals with the prodromal risk syndrome for psychosis and 34 demographically comparable controls, 81 first-episode schizophrenia patients and 46 demographically comparable controls, and 53 chronic schizophrenia patients and 47 demographically comparable controls. Outcome measures included total and subtest scores on 3 specialized measures of social cognition: (1) emotion processing assessed with the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, (2) ToM assessed with The Awareness of Social Inference Test, and (3) social relationship perception assessed the Relationships Across Domains Test. Social cognitive performance was impaired across all domains of social cognition and in all clinical samples. Group differences in performance were comparable across phase of illness, with no evidence of progression or improvement. Age had no significant effect on performance for either the clinical or the comparison groups. The findings suggest that social cognition in these 3 domains fits a stable pattern that has outcome and treatment implications. An accompanying article prospectively examines the longitudinal stability of social cognition and prediction of functional outcome in the first-episode sample.

Committee report: Publication guidelines and recommendations for studies using electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography

Electromagnetic data collected using electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are of central importance for psychophysiological research. The scope of concepts, methods, and instruments used by EEG/MEG researchers has dramatically increased and is expected to further increase in the future. Building on existing guideline publications, the goal of the present paper is to contribute to the effective documentation and communication of such advances by providing updated guidelines for conducting and reporting EEG/MEG studies. The guidelines also include a checklist of key information recommended for inclusion in research reports on EEG/MEG measures.

Neurocognitive predictors of work outcome in recent-onset schizophrenia.

While the role of neurocognitive impairment in predicting functional outcome in chronic schizophrenia is now widely accepted, the results that have examined this relationship in the early phase of psychosis are surprisingly rather mixed. The predictive role of cognitive impairment early in the illness is of particular interest because interventions during this initial period may help to prevent the development of chronic disability. In a University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) longitudinal study, we assessed schizophrenia patients with a recent first episode of psychosis using a neurocognitive battery at an initial clinically stabilized outpatient point and then followed them during continuous treatment over the next 9 months. Three orthogonal cognitive factors were derived through principal components analysis: working memory, attention and early perceptual processing, and verbal memory and processing speed. All patients were provided a combination of maintenance antipsychotic medication, case management, group skills training, and family education in a UCLA research clinic. A modified version of the Social Adjustment Scale was used to assess work outcome. Multiple regression analyses indicate that the combination of the 3 neurocognitive factors predicts 52% of the variance in return to work or school by 9 months after outpatient clinical stabilization. These data strongly support the critical role of neurocognitive factors in recovery of work functioning after an onset of schizophrenia. Cognitive remediation and other interventions targeting these early cognitive deficits are of major importance to attempts to prevent chronic disability.

Electrophysiological Analysis of Error Monitoring in Schizophrenia

In this study, the authors sought to determine whether abnormalities exhibited by schizophrenia patients in event-related potentials associated with self-monitoring--the error-related negativity (ERN) and the correct response negativity (CRN)--persist under conditions that maximize ERN amplitude and to examine relationships between the ERN and behavior in schizophrenia. Participants performed a flanker task under 2 contingencies: one encouraging accuracy and another emphasizing speed. Compared with healthy participants, in schizophrenia patients the ERN was reduced in the accuracy condition, and the CRN was enhanced in the speed condition. The amplitude of a later ERP component, the error positivity, did not differ between groups in either task condition. Reduced self-correction and increased accuracy following errors were associated with larger ERNs in both groups. Thus, ERN generation appears to be abnormal in schizophrenia patients even under conditions demonstrated to maximize ERN amplitude; however, functional characteristics of the ERN appear to be intact.

Ethnicity and Gender in Scales of Psychosis Proneness and Mood Disorders

Data for Caucasian, African American, Asian American, and Latino college-student samples were compared for several popular self-report scales of psychopathology. Significant group differences were obtained for all scales, with the Caucasian sample consistently having the lowest means. Some gender effects and interactions with ethnic group were also observed. The authors discuss implications of these findings for use of these scales, including implications for use of Caucasian norms with other ethnic samples.

Event-related potential correlates of linguistic information processing in schizophrenics.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from adult schizophrenics and age- and education-matched normal controls during performance of an idiom recognition task involving judgments of the meaningfulness of idiomatic, literal, and nonsense phrases. Schizophrenics produced more errors and had prolonged reaction times while attempting to correctly differentiate meaningful from meaningless phrases. An ERP correlate of that deficit was a larger than normal N400 to idioms and literals, with no difference in N400 amplitude to nonsense phrases. This result was interpreted as evidence that the influence of the linguistic context provided by the first word of two-word idiomatic and literal phrases is reduced in schizophrenia. Schizophrenics also showed reduced amplitude P300.

A Dual-Task Analysis of Resource Allocation in Dysthymia and Anhedonia

Research has shown dysthymic individuals to be hyporesponsive at various stages of information processing, yet it is not clear whether dysthymics are deficient in the amount of available attentional resources for information processing or, instead, in the allocation of those resources. To distinguish between these possibilities, the authors compared dysthymics to anhedonic and normal control Ss during the performance of memory tasks, under conditions of varying task priority and difficulty. Although there were no performance differences, dysthymics and anhedonics exhibited a consistently smaller P300 component of the event-related potential. Furthermore, P300 results indicated that dysthymics and anhedonics responded differently from controls to variations in task demands. Thus, although evidence was obtained for group differences in both resource capacity and resource allocation strategy, the overall pattern of results is interpreted as favoring the latter.

Experimental modification of P50 suppression

White and Yee (1997) found that normal suppression of the P50 component of the event-related potential was disrupted during a paired-click paradigm when nonpsychiatric subjects performed mental arithmetic (MA) problems aloud, concurrently with the presentation of auditory stimuli. In fact, the degree of disruption reflected in the P50 suppression ratio fell within the range that is typically observed in schizophrenia patients. The present study was conducted to clarify the processes that might underlie the apparent disruption of P50 suppression during performance of an oral MA task. Participants completed a series of tasks designed to examine the impact of competing cognitive activity, competing auditory stimulation, muscle activity, and acute psychological stress on P50 amplitude and P50 suppression. Results suggested that psychological stress and heightened facial muscle activity may exert modulatory effects on P50 suppression.

Distinct neural generators of sensory gating in schizophrenia

Although malfunctioning of inhibitory processes is proposed as a pathophysiological mechanism in schizophrenia and has been studied extensively with the P50 gating paradigm, the brain regions involved in generating and suppressing the P50 remain unclear. The current investigation used EEG source analysis and the standard S1-S2 paradigm to clarify the neural structures associated with P50 gating in 16 schizophrenia patients and 14 healthy subjects. Based on prior research, the superior temporal gyrus, hippocampus, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, thalamus, and their dipole moments were evaluated. In modeling the P50, a neural network involving all four brain regions provided the best goodness-of-fit across both groups. In healthy subjects, the P50 ratio score correlated positively with the hippocampal dipole moment ratio, whereas a significant association with the DLPFC dipole moment ratio was observed in schizophrenia patients. In each instance, the neural structure was found to account for unique variance in explaining the P50 ratio, along with some suggestion of DLPFC involvement in healthy subjects.
