Claudia Hofheinz Giacomoni; Claudio Simon Hutz

The main purpose of this study was to develop a Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale for Children, as well as to present significant psychometric information. In parallel, we tested Huebners Childrens Life Satisfaction Multidimensional Model. Construction and validation studies were carried out. The final version of the Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale for Children includes 50 items, divided into 6 groupings: self, Compared self, Non-violence, Family, Friendship and School. We found adequate internal consistencies for each subscale as well as for the scale as a whole. The concurrent validity of the Childrens Life Satisfaction Multidimensional sub-scales was confirmed through average correlation coefficients using criterion measurement.

Claudia Hofheinz Giacomoni; Claudio Simon Hutz

The main purpose of this study was to develop a Children’s Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. We presented two studies development and validation studies. We evaluated the children’s positive and negative affect level, as well possible differences between sex, age and kind of school (private x public). 661 children (52.2% boys), age seven to 12 years (m = 10.6 years; d.p. = 1.7) participated scale development’ studies, from public (54%) and private schools in Porto Alegre. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule finalized with 34 items, 17 in each subscale. The subscales demonstrate acceptable internal consistency (Positive Affect Subscale = 0.88; Negative Affect Subscale = 0.84). The results of Factor Analysis confirmed a two factor solution. Were obtained concurrent validation. The results indicated that Children’s Positive and Negative Affect Schedule correlated as expected with various criterion measures. The Children’s Positive and Negative Affect Schedule appears useful for research and to develop the subjective well-being area. Key-words: Positive affect; Negative affect; Measure.

In this paper we aim at investigating the concept of happiness from the adolescentsperspective. For this purpose we adapted the partially structured interview script about childrens subjective well being produced by Giacomoni (2002). We studied 95 adolescents, between 12 and 20 years, students of tree public schools of the interior of the Rio Grande do Sul. The transcribing interviews were submitted to a content analysis, from which we extracted thematic categories. The categories we got from the study pointed to a trend of the adolescents in mentioning abstract feelings and concrete necessities related to happiness. The analysis of significant differences by sex pointed that girls mentioned diverse kinds of relationships related to happiness, while boys tend to correlate happiness with personal belonging and life conditions. These findings can contribute to the construction of subjective well-being assessment scales for teenagers. Moreover, they can help educator in giving orientation and making intervention when necessary. In this paper we aim at investigating the concept of happiness from the adolescents perspective.
