In the search for new ways to better reflect on the nursing appointments as an opportunity for prenatal health education, we performed a reflexive study with a qualitative evaluation in which subject participation was a predominant factor. To this end, we used a new paradigm as a methodological reference - the emancipative evaluation that oriented this research and described reality. Besides non-participative observation, we used the interviews with the five nurses who work at the outpatient ward of the University Hospital - chosen site for the research - for data collection. In light of the results found, the educational action accomplished by the nurse during prenatal consultation is characterized as a routine action, with little participation, mainly informative, in spite of the good intention to educate, during which issues regarding the Institutions care, structural and organizational models emerged as obstacles for the accomplishment of education in health as a liberating, transforming and critical-social trend. The research points toward reorienting nursing prenatal care, creating an appropriate physical environment for the nursing consultation and participation of pregnant women in groups.

This is a descriptive study, within uantitative approach, aiming at acquiring knowledge regarding the domestic practice of Mother Kangaroo Method. Data were collected from a survey for the parents of prematures hospitalized in a University Hospital in Sao Luis, Maranhao State, from May to August, 2005. According to the findings, 100% of the families received training and guidance in the hospital and only in 53.3% of the cases the mothers were guided. The benefits of the education works developed by the team were confirmed by domestic practice with 93.3% of the mothers performing the kangaroo position correctly, where 86.7% of the babies were slightly dressed, 86.7% of the mothers were breast feeding technically in a correct manner and 86.7% without any other items being used. 46.7% of the mothers stay 5 to 8 hours/day with their babies in this position and 66.7% identified house tasks as the principal obstacle of the practice. Regarding neonatal walk-in unit follow-up 63.3% of the mothers identified the lack of financial recourses to pay for transportation as the main difficulty factor. The data obtained show that the support from the family network and the health team seem to be the best way to guarantee the extension of domestic care.

Objectives: to assess the structure of maternity hospitals that provide care for woman undergoing abortions in the Brazilian National Health Service in the cities of Salvador, Recife and Sao Luis. Methods: three maternity hospitals were selected in each State capital. The data were obtained by way of interviews with the service manager or team of directors and direct observation. The interviews involved 120 questions divided into six sections - physical infrastructure, material resources, human resources, consumable materials, health education and management tools, covering four areas of evaluation - materials/physical environment; technical quality and care management; reception/guidance and continuity of care. The results were presented as a percentage of the maximum possible score: adequate (B80%); average (50% - 79%); inadequate (< 50%). Results: the highest scoring sections were physical infrastructure, material resources and consumable materials. Health education and management tools received the worst scores. No unit was deemed to have attained an adequate level of care. Seven were classified as average and two as inadequate. Conclusions: the units studied did not have an adequate structure for the intended abortion care model. There is a need for intervention to improve the structure of abortion care services and to promote the humanization of care.
