The citation pattern of Brazilian economists

João Ricardo Faria; Ari Francisco de Araujo; Cláudio Djissey Shikida

This paper studies the determinants of international citations by Brazilian economists in papers published in the top domestic journals in 1994 and 2004. Brazilian research in economics has become more open to international influence and widespread geographically; researchers more specialized and technically oriented and the research topics more diversified. However, Brazil is plagued by editorial favoritism, reflected in the negative and significant impact of references to the works authored by domestic journals editors on international citations. We also find that longer technical papers written on topics other than the economic history of Brazil are more likely to cite foreign literature.

The article analyzes the determinants of the probability of dispute over land conflicts, occupations and settlement projects) in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Through the use of a logic model, we found that the main influences are political and economical ones. Apparently, the behavior of the agrarian reform’s supporters follows the political incentive, with fewer occurrences of conflicts in towns governed by political allies. By other hand, the economical determinants - degree of poverty and the economic growth - have negative impacts on it.

On October 23, 2005, the Brazilian society faced a referendum with two options: “to not ban the legal market for firearms” and “to ban the legal market for firearms”. Voters chose the first option. Along the months before the voting day, two interest groups were formed: one, called “No” – arguing for not banning the market – and the other group, called “Yes” – for the ban. This article has two main objectives: first, to analyze the arguments of each group using an analytical model and, two, to identify the determinants of the voter’s choice using data at the local level. The main results indicate that the votes for No were negatively correlated to the homicide rate (measured in 2002) and positively correlated with the marginal change of the homicide rate (between 1995 and 2002. Thus, cities in which the violence increases more quickly, the citizens did not choose to ban the legal market for firearms.

TEORIA ECONÔMICA DO SUICÍDIO: ESTUDO EMPÍRICO PARA O BRASIL

This paper reports regression results identifying the variables influencing a states performance in Brazilian Soccers Championship. The results reveal that economic, club-specific controls and political factors are important. An inverted U-shaped relationship is found with respect to regional per capita wealth. We also found significant positive political effects with respect to the performance of Brazilian teams in the short run and negative in the long run. Explanations for our results are offered.

A ELEIÇÃO DE DILMA EM 2010 E SEUS DETERMINANTES: EVIDÊNCIAS EMPÍRICAS DO PROGRAMA BOLSA FAMÍLIA

Ana Elisa Gonçalves Pereira; Cláudio Djissey Shikida; Felipe Garcia Ribeiro; Luciano Nakabashi

This paper presents empirical evidence that the Bolsa Familia cash transfer program played a major role in the election of Dilma Rousseff, the Workers’ Party candidate, in 2010 presidential election. Our analysis indicates that this effect was more relevant than the impact of the favorable economic scene during the two Lula’s mandates. Employing a sample of 5.564 Brazilian municipalities, the results obtained from Beta Regression models point out that this statement holds even when we take into account other economic, social and political variables, as well as unobservable regional characteristics. The empirical results also point to a greater vote share to Dilma in the municipalities that show lower levels of schooling, giving support to the literature that proposes that less educated people tend to be more dependent on the Government and, therefore, they tend to keep the status quo unchanged. Different specifications confirm the results obtained.
