O surfe e a moderna tradição brasileira

In this work, it is intended to describe and to analyze the history of surf in Rio de Janeiro, in order to infer elements of more general reflection on the way of development of its structures of functioning. The idea is to explore the relations between this sport and the social circumstances more general than had folloied to it and same they had produced to it, trying, in this way, to explain to it more adequately.

Sobre as ondas: surfe, juventude e cultura no Rio de Janeiro dos anos 1960

In the second half of the twentieth century, the influence of the United States in the world sporting arena is explicit. The spreading of cultural practices showing North American traces, such as surfing, cannot however be considered only as the result of imposition: there are local appropriations that say much about the context of reception. Based on this consideration, this article aims to discuss the aprehention of surfing in Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s. It thus explores how this sport was taken as a marker of identity, based on its links to certain notions of youth and lifestyle.

Sport and Environment in Brazil: A Historical Overview

The objective of this article is to present a historical overview of the relationship between sport and the environment in Brazil. In this country, as elsewhere, the so-called adventure sports are among the main expressions of this relationship. In general, many of these sports claim a status of innovation and originality, sometimes challenging the conceptual parameters for the more common definition of sport. However, the construction of these imaginary is strongly influenced by a long historical process. Accordingly, leisure experiences in nature, in historical development since the nineteenth century, play an important role in the current allocation of the social meaning of extreme or adventure sports.

Leisure and urbanisation in Brazil from the 1950s to the 1970s

This article discusses the relationship between the change in the conception of leisure and the acceleration of the urbanisation process in Brazil from the 1950s to the 1970s. In order to achieve this goal, we used Veja magazine as a privileged source, as well as a literature review. Created in the 1960s and uninterruptedly published up to today, this weekly magazine has been characterised by its widespread distribution throughout Brazil and by its interest in subjects connected to social behaviour. We conclude that in the period studied, the growth of the Brazilian cities, alongside the consolidation of the process of industrialisation, triggered new behaviours linked to consumption and a new sensitivity towards nature, dimensions that instituted new forms of leisure. Similarly, the new postures towards nature, the new consuming habits, as well as the new conceptions of leisure, influenced the path of urbanisations. As a consequence of this process, it is possible to notice an enhancement in the offering of services and governmental concerns related to leisure, as well as the structuring of a field of investigation around leisure.

Momentos iniciais da educação física em Goiás (1917-1929)

Este artigo analisa os momentos iniciais da organizacao institucional da educacao fisica em escolas de Goias, valendo-se de legislacoes, jornais, fotografias, livros de memorias e documentos oficiais como fontes. Desenvolvendo uma abordagem da historia regional, o trabalho argumenta que o periodo entre 1917 e 1929 foi crucial para o inicio desse processo. Mais especificamente, uma combinacao de interesses civis e militares, nacionais e regionais, de dentro e de fora de Goias, parece ter sido o principal responsavel por esse processo de construcao social da educacao fisica na regiao.

Esporte e política em Invictus, de Clint Eastwood

The political use of sport in South Africa during apartheid is recognized as one of the most successful. Recently, the film Invictus, by Clint Eastwood, explores these circumstances, telling the way in which Mandela’s government did a policy of racial reconciliation during the Rugby World Cup, in the 1995. The objective of this work is to analyze this film, reflecting, at some time, about the historical circumstances of South Africa and the relationship of the film with the American cultural context. The film seems an allegory to talk about political problems of United States, specially the immigration and multiculturalism.

This paper pretended to revisit them critically, analyzing cases from very-little urbanized regions, which also got to know sports practices. ESTUDOS DO LAZER NO BRASIL EM PRINCÍPIOS DO SÉCULO XXI: PANORAMA E PERSPECTIVAS⃰

This study presents an overview of leisure studies in Brazil. We conducted a bibliometric analysis of articles published on Licere magazine in 2000-2010. During that period, the number of articles and co-authors per article has increased significantly. Books and Brazilian authors are the main references. Most authors who have published more often are trained in Physical Education. All this characterizes an ambivalent structure in Brazilian leisure studies: on the one hand, increasing autonomy for the field of research as a specialty area, with relatively little influence by foreign authors; on the other hand, the same general situation can also characterize superficial assimilation of traditions from the Humanities as well as certain isolation regarding works published outside Brazil.

Literatura, esportes e regionalismo no Brasil: O Grande Desportista, de Pascoal Toti Filho

Resumo : Trabalhos que analisam livros ficcionais sobre esporte destacam o potencial dessas obras de codificar e divulgar percepcoes que exprimam uma escala de valores a respeito desta pratica. No Brasil, tais analises tem enfatizado o uso da literatura como recurso para articulacao de uma identidade nacional, exagerando o papel desempenhado por obras e escritores de regioes metropolitanas, ao mesmo tempo em que ocultam, em contrapartida, a diversidade regional que afetou esse campo de atividades. Alem das obras de nomes literarios consagrados ou publicadas nos centros metropolitanos brasileiros, uma literatura ficcional e jornalistica sobre esporte teve lugar tambem em regioes do hinterland brasileiro. Com o proposito de revelar parte desta diversidade, este artigo apresenta e analisa o romance O grande desportista , de Pascoal Toti Filho, publicado em 1922, em Uberaba, Minas Gerais. O artigo enfatiza dois assuntos facilmente destacaveis como elementos para analise historica na obra: as relacoes de genero e geopoliticas entre a capital de Sao Paulo e o interior de Minas Gerais. Abstract : Studies that analyze fictional books on sports have highlighted how these publications carry the potential to encode and disseminate perceptions that express values about this practice. In Brazil, such analyzes have emphasized the use of literature as a tool for articulating national identity, by overestimating the roles of books and writers from metropolitan areas, while concealing, nonetheless, the regional diversity that affected this field of activities. Besides works by famous literary names or those published in Brazilian metropolitan centers, a fictional and journalistic sports literature bloomed in regions of the Brazilian hinterland, as well. With the purpose of revealing such diversity, this article presents and analyzes Pascoal Toti Filho’s book O grande desportista ( The Great Sportsman ), published in 1922, in Uberaba, Minas Gerais. This article emphasizes gender and geopolitical relations between the capital of Sao Paulo and the countryside of Minas Gerais – two easily detachable themes, taken here as elements of historical analysis in the given novel.
