Fabricando o soldado, forjando o cidadão: o doutor Eduardo Augusto Pereira de Abreu, a Guerra do Paraguai e a educação física no Brasil

Carlos Leonardo Bahiense da Silva; Victor Andrade de Melo

The article discusses Eduardo Augusto Pereira de Abreus Estudos higienicos sobre a educacao fisica, intelectual e moral do soldado (Hygienic studies on the physical, intellectual, and moral education of soldiers), published in 1867. Marked by the experience of the Paraguayan War, this was one of the first works that endeavored explicitly to conjoin medical and military concerns and to establish a clear link between molding a soldier and forming a citizen, both ready to defend the fatherland. Placing heavy emphasis on the practice of physical activities tied in with civism, robustness, and good health, the book both anticipated and influenced subsequent debates in Brazil on the importance of physical education.

O surfe no cinema e a sociedade brasileira na transição dos anos 70/80

Victor Andrade de Melo; Rafael Fortes

In the transition from the 70s to the 80sfour films in which surfing was a central issue were released, in Brazil, attracting large crowds: Nas ondas do surf, by Livio Bruni Junior (1978); Nos embalos de Ipanema (1978), Menino do Rio (1981), and Garota Dourada (1983), all by Antonio Calmon. Besides, this sport was represented as a side theme in other motion pictures. What lies beneath this enormous growth of surfings presence in Brazils movies? How can this help us think not only the different configurations of the sport field but also the specific Brazilian sociocultural context? Considering such questions, this article aims to analyse these four films, produced in Brazil between 1978 and 1983, in which surfing occupied privileged space. We conclude that the studied films signaled and helped forge the new symbolic dimensions for the Brazilian society in the transition year 70/80, in which surfing has become a more constant presence in several areas.

Mulheres em movimento: a presença feminina nos primórdios do esporte na cidade do Rio de Janeiro (até 1910)

Victor Andrade de Melo

This article discusses the presence of women in the early days of sport in the city of Rio de Janeiro (until 1910). To this end, newspapers and magazines published in the city at the time were researched, as well as books of memoirs. The goal is to present an oversight of the involvement of women in different sports, at various historical moments, performing distinctive roles. Looking at the peculiarities of each of those occurrences, we can trace a profile of the tensions and confrontations women faced at the time. In conclusion, we noted that if the increase of the feminine presence met, in a way, masculine interests, it was also a result of social expansion and their demands for their rights, and it should also be seen as a conquest.

O corpo da nação: posicionamentos governamentais sobre a educação física no Brasil monárquico

Victor Andrade de Melo; Fabio de Faria Peres

In association with its nation building projects, the imperial government in Brazil under monarchic rule took some concrete actions based on proposals for physical education. The aim of this article is to investigate the meanings and significations attributed to this subject in the legislation and the annual reports issued by the Ministry of Business of the Empire (1831-1889), giving special attention to Rio de Janeiro. The approach to the subject in the sources researched demonstrates that the views of physical education took shape through a web of ideas that associated moral, health and civilization conceptions, in a bid to deal with the concrete circumstances of a newly independent peripheral nation with a bureaucratic structure in the process of formation.

Victor Andrade de Melo

In the first half of the 19 th century were structured in the Rio de Janeiro several initiatives related to dance, organized in a context marked by a social life increasingly dynamic, which had as one of the indicators the conformation of an entertainment market. This study aims to discuss, in this context, dance education experiences in non-school settings. As timeframes, it adopted 1810s, when it started to take shape such initiatives, and the 1850s, the height of the popularity of dance in the city. To reach the goal, as sources were used newspapers and magazines published in the period. It has expected to better understand an important sphere of body education that had several points of interface with other social areas, including school, and is also a facet of the city’s history that deserves to be unveiled.

Sobre as ondas: surfe, juventude e cultura no Rio de Janeiro dos anos 1960

Cleber Dias; Rafael Fortes; Victor Andrade de Melo

In the second half of the twentieth century, the influence of the United States in the world sporting arena is explicit. The spreading of cultural practices showing North American traces, such as surfing, cannot however be considered only as the result of imposition: there are local appropriations that say much about the context of reception. Based on this consideration, this article aims to discuss the aprehention of surfing in Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s. It thus explores how this sport was taken as a marker of identity, based on its links to certain notions of youth and lifestyle.

Before Fittipaldi, Piquet and Senna: The Beginning of Motor Racing in Brazil (1908–1954)

Victor Andrade de Melo

Brazilian drivers have dominated the history of Formula One racing and therefore hold a prominent place in the international pantheon of the sport. Brazil is by no means a wealthy country, nor is it as socially advanced as a great deal of others, and therefore such a significant role in international motor sport may at first appear unlikely. This article unpacks the relationship between Brazil and the sport of motor racing, something that is strongly connected to the role played by the automobile since its arrival in Brazil. The main purpose of this article, however, is to discuss the history of Brazilian motor racing from the first structured auto races (Sao Paulo, 1908, and Rio de Janeiro, 1909) until the dawn of the Rio de Janeiro Grand Prix, staged at the famous Gavea Circuit, which represents the critical point at which Brazilian motor racing entered the highest echelons of world motor sport.Brazilian drivers have dominated the history of Formula One racing and therefore hold a prominent place in the international pantheon of the sport. Sport, medicine and art: the 'enchanted science' of the body in the works of Thomas Eakins

Victor Andrade de Melo; Fabio de Faria Peres

The article analyzes representations of sport and medicine in the output of the American artist Thomas Eakins, one of the most influential and original in the United States during the transition between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is based on the presupposition that Eakins was able to translate esthetically a plethora of representations related to modernity, including the prelude to intimate relationships and, in an age still sui generis, the practice of sports, health and medicine, transmitted through the idea of a show. This study hopes to be one more contribution to the promotion of what we have called a social archeology of sports, a prospecting of its presence among social networks and webs.
