A framework to support teaching in distributed systems

Computer networks and distribute systems are characterized by highly dynamic, concurrent, and complex processes. Thus, training in this area requires great effort from both teachers and learners. Teachers are disatisfied with available methods for presentation, explanation, and exercises, and they are looking for better methods to support learners. We have developed and architecture called Highly interactive simulation of algorithms and Protocols (HiSAP), consisting of a framework to build simulations and generate applets from formally specified algorithms or protocols. By modifying this specification and observing the resulting behavior, teaching and learning in a constructive manner is enabled. The framework is open to plug-in tools to show various aspects of HiSAPs behavior. We present the results of some experiments with HiSAP at three different lectures for graduate students of distributed systems and computer networks.

Team awareness with mobile agents in mobile environments

There are several aspects involved in supporting human cooperative work by computers. One of them concerns team awareness to avoid unnecessary effort or even chaos. Notification services provide suited information about other team members and team relevant events. Traditionally, such services are realized by a central or distributed approach but exhibit shortcomings with respect to filtering policies and mobility of notified participants. A third alternative consists in applying mobile software agents. In this case, each participant is represented by one immobile and a number of mobile agents. The immobile agent manages all events that are caused by its user. Mobile agents are responsible to observe events being caused by other team members. They communicate either remotely or locally with managers of their partners. Advantages and disadvantages of all possible mechanisms are discussed.

Interactive Protocol Simulation Applets for Distance Education

Traditionally, education relies on lectures and on execercises. During lectures, information is transferred from teacher to learner via text, images and sometimes videos. But these communication media are mostly fix and do not allow manipulation. Exercises care for stepping into this breach. They take place in simulated or real environment and enable experimenting but can be far from lectures. Thus, learners have to stay in relatively close contact to tutors to be able to perform their exercises. In distance education, such closeness can not always be guaranteed.

Rechnerunterstützung für Interaktionen zwischen Menschen Begriffsklärung, Anwendungsgebiete und Basiswerkzeuge

Menschen interagieren auf vielfältige Art und Weise miteinander, privat und beruflich, im überschaubaren Team und zwischen beliebig groûen Organisationen. Sobald dabei räumliche oder zeitliche Grenzen zu überwinden sind, wird eine Form der technischen Unterstützung benötigt, die auch durch Rechner und Rechnernetze erbracht werden kann. Darüber hinaus können Rechner für Routinearbeiten eingesetzt werden, die im Zusammenhang mit zwischenmenschlichen Interaktionen anfallen. Das gesamte Gebiet derartiger Rechnerunterstützung wird bereits seit einiger Zeit interdisziplinär und unter verschiedenen Aspekten untersucht, was zu einer groûen Menge unterschiedlicher Begriffe und Werkzeuge führte, die sich jedoch teilweise überlappen bzw. für vielfältige Zwecke einsetzbar sind. Um dieses Gebiet zu strukturieren und die existierenden Werkzeuge (Prototypen aus der Forschung, Standardisierungsvorgaben, Produkte) einordnen zu können, wird im folgenden nach einem dreistufigen Schema vorgegangen:

Context Notification in Mobile Environment to Find the Right Person in Time

People searching for somebody else who is suited for a certain task should not only know about current location and context of this person but also about further characteristics like her capabilities. We propose a solution, that provides added value to existing services for context notification. It can be used in arbitrary networks consisting of mobile devices and stationary computers and is flexible enough for a broad spectrum of application scenarios. Two kinds of filters guarantee the appropriate level of privacy and prevent from information overflow. The prototypical realization is based on IrDA (Infrared Data Association) and a mobile agent infrastructure.

Co-authoring in Dynamic Teams with Mobile Individuals

Current solutions to support co-authoring of documents focus on building new systems for participants who are assumed to be connected permanently by a network. We propose an alternate approach, that copes with increasing usage of mobile/handheld devices and heterogeneous editing systems. It contains representatives for mobile participants in a fixed part of the network. By using a global standardized document format and a wide spread platform, the flexibility to constitute arbitrary teams in spontaneous manner is increased.

Informatik AG für Schülerinnen - Konzepte und Erfahrungen

Einem wachsenden Interesse an weiblichen Absolventen von Seiten der Industrie steht eine seit einiger Zeit besonders niedrige Zahl an Informatikstudentinnen gegenuber. Diesem Misverhait-nis kann durch vermehrte Information uber das Studienfach begegnet werden. Aus diesem Grund wurde im ersten Halbjahr 1997 an der Universitat Stuttgart eine Informatik AG fur Schulerinnen durchgefuhrt. Den Schwerpunkt dieser Veranstaltung bildeten Vortrage durch Wissenschaftlerinnen sowie praktische Aufgaben an den Rechnern. Die Aufgaben wurden in Ubungsgruppen vorbereitet, die von Studentinnen betreut wurden. Im folgenden werden die zugrundeliegenden Konzepte und die unter anderem aus Fragebogen gewonnenen Erfahrungen dieses Projektes geschildert.

Internetbasiertes Lernen — Interaktive Animation von Kommunikationsprotokollen auf generischem Wege

Im Bereich der Lehre werden traditionell hauptsachlich Text und Bilder auf Folien oder Dias und im Skript zur Vermittlung von Lehrinhalten eingesetzt. Diese Lehrverfahren stosen jedoch an Grenzen, wenn es darum geht, dynamische Prozesse wie z. B. Kommunikationsprotokolle in verteilten Systemen verstandlich zu machen. Da sich Dynamik mit unbewegten Bildern nur eingeschrankt darstellen last, gewinnt rechnergestutzte Animation in der Lehre an Bedeutung. Auserdem sind Lehrvorgange dann am wirkungsvollsten, wenn der Lernende aktiv und gestaltend daran mitwirken kann.
