This research was carried out to evaluate different housing systems for broiler chickens production, characterizing the thermal environment, physiological parameters and animal behavior. The experiment was conducted in a production cycle of 42 days, in the city of Carpina, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, at the Experimental Station for Small Animals of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE). The survey was developed in production module divided into 15 boxes with 10 birds per box and density of the 10 birds per m2, totaling 150 birds, submitted to the three housing systems: semi-confined with 3m2 per broiler of paddock area (SC 3), semi-confined with 6m2 per broiler of paddock area (SC 6) and total confinement (CONF). The experimental design for data general analysis was completely randomized (CRD), in split plots, being the weeks allocated in the plots and the accommodation systems (SC 3, SC 6, CONF and EXT) in the sub-plots with the averages compared through the Tukey test. The meteorological variables, comfort indexes and physiological parameters indicated the semi-confined system of accommodation SC 3 as one that allowed better natural conditioning heat to the birds, presenting the average values of 25.4oC, 69.9 kJ kg-1, 75.7, 65.12 movements min-1 and 41.92oC for dry bulb temperature, enthalpy, black globe humidity index, respiratory rate and cloacal temperature, respectively. The birds subjected to the semi-confined system SC 3 were those that had better opportunity to express their natural behavior and explore the external environment to the module of production, leveraging the animal welfare.

Black meshes used in greenhouses provide shade to plants, affecting photosynthesis and presenting certain properties that change the microclimatic conditions in these environments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variation in climate elements in greenhouse cultivated with gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii, Vr. Rambo) in relation to external conditions and the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) at Teresina, State of Piaui, Brazil. The measurements were obtained from July to October 2007 by an automatic data acquisition system installed inside and outside the greenhouse. The global solar radiation, evapotranspiration, precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed were estimated. The results showed that major effect of the shading occurred on the mean air temperature during the 120 days, making it higher than the external environment. Inside the greenhouse, mean values of relative air humidity, reference evapotranspiracao, global solar radiation and wind speed were lower compared to those outside the greenhouse.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the precision of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to estimate zootechnical indexes, based on thermal and physiological variables of pregnant sows. This study was carried out from January to April 2005, in a swine industrial production farm in the gestation section with 27 primiparous gilts, allocated in individual pens and after on farrowing pens where it was quantified animal production indexes of piglets from the study. Therefore, an ANN backpropagation was implemented, with one input layer, one hidden layer, and one output layer with tangent sigmoidal transference functions. Air temperature and respiratory frequency were considered as input variables and weight of piglet at birth and the number of mummified piglets as output variables. The trained ANN presented a great generalization power, which enabled the prediction of the answer-variables. Characterization of the environment of gestation and maternity was appropriated if compared to the real data, with few under or overestimated tendencies of some values. The use of this specialist system to predict zootechnical indexes is viable because the system shows a good performance for this use.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of low density polyethylene (PEBD) as a greenhouse cover in association with thermal shading screen installed in two different positions (outside and inside), cultivated with gerbera, on solar radiation (Qg), as well as on the growth and quality of gerbera plants. The experiment was carried out during two crop cycles in 2004, at ESALQ/USP, in Piracicaba, State of Sao Paulo, Brasil. A greenhouse was sub-divided into two parts and covered with PEBD differing from each other by the position of the thermal shading screen (50%), witch was installed inside (at 3 m height) and outside (covering the plastic cover). The environment with the thermal screen outside was named A1 and the other one with the thermal screen inside was named A2. The results from the two crop cycles showed that the microclimate was changed by the covers of the greenhouses. Qg inside for A1 and A2 were respectively 33.6 and 21.7 (first cycle), and 27.2 and 17.9% (second cycle) of the values measured outside. Considering the two crop cycles, the results showed that there were no differences in plant quality in both environments. However, A1 was the most favorable environment for plant quality when considering the two crop cycles, separately the results separately. Also, only gerberas from A1 showed themselves to have marketable characteristics.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of cooling of pre-milking cows on production, physiology, thermal conditioning and the cost-benefit of the Adiabatic Evaporative Cooling System (AECS). Sixteen cows were used with an average daily milk production of 18 kg, distributed in 4 x 4 Latin square design. The Tukey test (P<0.05) was utilized for comparison of means. The treatments (0, 10, 20 and 30 min.) consisted of exposure of pre-milking cows to the AECS. The dry bulb temperature (DBT, oC) and relative humidity (RH, %) were recorded every minute, which allowed the determination of the efficiency of the AECS through the temperature and humidity Index (THI) and enthalpy (h). The respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT) and temperature of the coat (TC) were measured before and after cooling. The 30 min. treatment kept the environmental variables and the comfort indexes within recommended limits. The physiological variables (RR, RT and TC) were lower in the 30 min treatment and reflected positively on milk production, which increased 4.35% compared to the control treatment (0 min). The investment was profitable having a 58 day return on investment and a monthly revenue increase of R
