At present, the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) emphasizes the importance of collaborative learning in University education. Previous studies have found evidence to support collaborative activities; however, none have analyzed the influence of contact networks among students on their engagement and performance. This paper reports an intervention with nursing degree students aimed at facilitating an interdependent network to promote engagement and improve academic performance. The intervention was based on recording a video during a case study. The variables analyzed were network centrality, engagement and performance. The UCINET program was used to analyse social networks. The results showed a more cohesive network after the intervention and a high level of academic performance. The use of contact networks among students could be used as an academic strategy to build bridges between students in the classroom and even between these and students in other classrooms or centres.

Analysis of social networks may be a useful tool for understanding the relationship between resilience and engagement, and this could be applied to educational methodologies, not only to improve academic performance, but also to create emotionally sustainable networks. This descriptive study was carried out on 134 university students. We collected the network structural variables, degree of resilience (CD-RISC 10), and engagement (UWES-S). The computer programs used were excel, UCINET for network analysis, and SPSS for statistical analysis. The analysis revealed results of means of 28.61 for resilience, 2.98 for absorption, 4.82 for dedication, and 3.13 for vigour. The students had two preferred places for sharing information: the classroom and WhatsApp. The greater the value for engagement, the greater the degree of centrality in the friendship network among students who are beginning their university studies. This relationship becomes reversed as the students move to later academic years. In terms of resilience, the highest values correspond to greater centrality in the friendship networks. The variables of engagement and resilience influenced the university students’ support networks.

The Social Network Analysis offers a view of social phenomena based on interactions. The aim of this study is to compare social reality through the cohesion variable and analyse its relationship with the resilience of university students. This information is useful to work with the students academically and to optimise the properties of the network that have an influence in academic performance. This is a descriptive transversal study with 90 students from the first and third year of the Nursing Degree. Cohesion variables from the support and friendship networks and the level of resilience were gathered. The UCINET programme was used for network analysis and the SPSS programme for statistical analysis. The students’ friendship and support networks show high intra-classroom cohesion although there are no differences between the support networks and friendship or minimal contact networks in both of the courses used for the study. The network cohesion indicators show less cohesion in the third year. No correlations were found between cohesion and resilience. Resilience does not appear to be an attribute related to cohesion or vice versa.

EnglishResilience is the ability to adapt at adverse events, overcome them and be able to achieve successful progress despite having lived that harmful situation. Core self-evaluations are a broad, higher-order personality factor composed of four personality traits: self-esteem, self-efficacy, internal locus of control and neuroticism. In this paper, we aim to know if there is a relationship between resilience and the broad personality factor called core self-evaluations, we also consider whether there are differences by sex and age. Participants were 620 students and scholars (50% male) from Leon and Salamanca (Spain). The measures were the Ego-Resilience Scale and the Core Self-Evaluations Scale (CSES). The results indicate that students with higher scores on the resilience scale also score higher on core self-evaluations. We found differences statistically significant by sex: men obtained higher scores on resilience and core self-evaluations. Younger students take the highest scores on core self-evaluations. We can concluded that the most resilient young people are those with greater emotional stability, healthier self-esteem, have internal locus of control and higher self-efficacy. EnglishThe aim of this correlational study was identify if there are relationship between emotional intelligence and academic burnout. Participants were 134 nursing students that completed a series of questionnaires: the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale SSEI-33 and the Emotional Intelligence Scale EIS-25 to evaluate emotional intelligence, and the MBI-SS to evaluate academic burnout. We performed a statistical analysis of correlations, the Student’s t-test, and the multiple regression analysis. The results showed that emotional intelligence correlated positively with the burnout dimension of academic self-efficacy and explained 21.7% of variance. Nursing students with high levels of emotional intelligence and emotional conscience (dimension of emotional intelligence) had higher perceptions of academic self-efficacy, which could result in greater present and future academic success, and consequently in subsequent professional success. Further research on emotional intelligence assessment instruments is required in order to gain a deeper understanding of these constructs, to promote these within universities and thus achieve healthier, more successful students.

This paper is part of a research project into innovation in education, undertaken at the [name deleted for review process], with university students from Health Sciences. The aim of the study was to demonstrate how the cooperative networking of students, increasing the engagement and academic outcomes. For this, a teaching methodology was designed where the students had to build a case in video format and establish relationships between them to transfer help, advice and ideas. The network before and after the intervention was measured by applying the method of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and the UCINET software. The engagement was measured with a questionnaire about Commitment (Student Academic Engagement) based on studies by Schaufeli et al, 2002. These results show that (i) the network was broader after intervention, (ii) the degree of connections associated with increased engagement, and (iii) the degree of student satisfaction was high with this teaching methodology.
