The long-term patterns of regional income inequality in Spain (1860-2000)

Julio Martinez-Galarraga; Joan R. Rosés; Daniel A. Tirado

Martínez-Galarraga J., Rosés J. R. and Tirado D. A. The long-term patterns of regional income inequality in Spain, 1860–2000, Regional Studies. Building on a new estimation of regional gross domestic product (GDP) from 1860 to 2000, this paper evaluates the long-run evolution of regional income inequality in Spain. It is found that sustained economic growth and the progressive integration of national markets have been accompanied by an inverted ‘U’-shaped evolution of regional income inequality. Regional inequality in income per worker rose during the second half of the nineteenth century, peaked in the year 1900 and decreased over the following ninety years. Since 1990, together with the exhaustion of the convergence in regional productive structures, Spains membership in the European Union generated a new upsurge of differences in labour productivity across the country that could be the basis for a new phase of regional income divergence.

A test of the market potential equation in Spain

Elisenda Paluzie; Jordi Pons; Daniel A. Tirado

In this article, we examine the relationship between regional wages in Spain and the market potential of these regions in the period 1955 to 1995. We demonstrate the existence of a spatial wage structure, in which wages fall with increasing distance from the highest income regions. This result strengthens the hypothesis that agglomerative forces were operating in Spain during the second half of the twentieth century.

Market potential and city growth: Spain 1860-1960

Rafael González-Val; Daniel A. Tirado; Elisabet Viladecans-Marsal

A few attempts have been made to analyse whether market potential might also have an impact on urban structures. In this paper we employ parametric and non-parametric techniques to analyse the effect of market potential on the growth of Spanish cities during the period 1860-1960. This period is especially interesting because it is characterized by the advance in the economic integration of the national market together with an intense process of industrialization. Our results show a clear positive influence of market potential on city growth.

El impacto exterior de las revistas españolas de economía

Jordi Pons Novell; Daniel A. Tirado

Integration of markets and industrial concentration: evidence from Spain, 1856-1907

Jordi Pons; Daniel A. Tirado; Elisenda Paluzie

The aim of this paper is to analyse the phenomena of trade liberalization and market integration in 19th century Spain and their effect on the geographical concentration of industrial activity. This empirical analysis confirms the existence of positive relationships between the degree of scale economies and industrial concentration and also between the degree of centrality and industrial concentration. The empirical data on trade policy show that protectionist policies did not foster a geographical concentration of industry in the 19th century Spanish economy.
