Born in 1930 in El-Biar, Algeria, Jacques Derrida studied philosophy at the Ecole normale superieure in Paris between 1952 and 1957. Admitted to the agregation in 1957, he began teaching at the Sorbonne in 1960, and from 1964 to 1984 taught at the Ecole normale superieure. He defended his doctoral thesis in 1980. In 1983, he became research director at the Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales in Paris. He is also counted among the founders of the College international de Philosophie, which he directed from 1983 to 1986. Derrida has taught at several American universities, including John Hopkins, Yale and the University of California.
