A storage ring for polar molecules

Daniel Katz

An electrostatic storage ring for polar molecules is proposed, including an analysis of the ring dynamics, loading, and losses for experimentally practical parameters. It is shown that storage lifetimes on the order of 103–104 s can be expected for methyl fluoride under reasonable operating conditions. A design for the storage ring is presented along with potential applications to molecular beam steering, molecular collision physics, and surface deposition and lithography. Other approaches to molecular storage are also briefly discussed.

Accuracy of Sonography to Predict Estimated Weight in Fetuses With Gastroschisis

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sonographic formulas for estimating fetal weight are as accurate for fetuses affected with gastroschisis as they are for healthy fetuses. We hypothesized that because the most commonly used Hadlock formulas rely on the abdominal circumference as a biometric variable, estimates of birth weight are less reliable in fetuses with gastroschisis than in healthy fetuses.

Optical Phase Conjugation in the Double Raman System

P. R. Hemmer; M. S. Shahriar; Daniel Katz; Prem Kumar; John Donoghue; Mark Cronin-Golomb

The double Raman (or double A system) has been the subject of much recent interest for applications such as lasing without inversion and precision laser frequency translation. We now show that coherent population trapping (CPT) in the double Raman system can be used to dramatically improve the performance of nonlinear optical materials that are based on resonant systems.
