This chapter presents a method that can be applied to perform a Systematic Literature Review. The Systematic Literature Review is a critical step in conducting scientific research. This chapter focuses particularly on the importance of this step for research conducted under the Design Science paradigm.

Purpose – The paper aims to present a case of integration between process engineering and the thinking process of the theory of constraints (TP‐TOC) through the analysis of an organizations processes, pointing out the complementary aspects between the two theories and their benefits for the organization.Design/methodology/approach – The paper has used an Institution of Higher Education as its case study. The research has started by identifying the processes of the institution and choosing one to model according to the process engineering approach. The process was then analyzed through the elaboration of the current reality tree technique. After the analysis, the evaporating clouds technique was applied in order to breach the assumptions that were avoiding the problems to be solved. Finally, the process has been redesigned based on the results of the previous steps.Findings – The analysis of this case contributes towards understanding and identifying the causes of the current problems in the studied proce...

This chapter presents the main concepts of design science research, which is a method that is conducted under the paradigm of design science to operationalize research. In addition to these concepts, the foundations for the application of design science research as a research method and the methods formalized by several authors for its operationalization are presented. A comparison of design science research with two alternate methods is performed. To prevent an exhaustive comparison in this book, we compare design science research with methods that are commonly used for qualitative research in Brazil: case study and action research.

– The purpose of this paper is to present a case of integration between the processes modeling by using the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and the Thinking Process of the Theory of Constraints (TP-TOC) through the analysis of productive processes of an organization, indicating the complementary aspects between them and their benefits to the organization. , – The paper uses a company of the Brazilian automotive industry as the administering site. The research began by identifying the organizations processes and choice of a family of products to model according to the VSM approach. The integrated view between the losses in the process (VSM) and the unwanted effects of the adding value process were analyzed by using the Current Reality Tree. After the analysis, different improvement procedures are proposed based on the lean principles. Finally, a work plan is presented based on the previous steps aiming to achieve the proposed future state. , – The analysis of this case helps to understand and identify the causes of the current problems in the processes studied, providing an integrated view between the losses in the process and the prioritization of steps for the elimination of such losses. The approach in its initial administration was robust and the solution steps were promising. By integrating these approaches, it was possible to verify improvement opportunities by identifying the losses and the basic causes that sustain the unwanted effects in the processes at the same time. , – The study proposes an approach that enables a systematic and systemic analysis of the processes at organizations through the combined use of process modeling through the VSM and TP-TOC. Simultaneously, the losses in the processes and the unwanted effects are identified. Thus, through the construction of an effect-cause-effect robust logic, both losses in particular and the unwanted effects in general can be prioritized in order to maximize the improvement efforts in the processes.

Among the different elements to be considered in management, cultural aspects have been placed in the central of the organizational discussions. This position derives of the fact that the sustainable competitive advantage originates from the understanding, respect and use of the different habits, practices, points of view and competences. Companies acting local or global need to look at the characteristics originated from your human capital. In this sense that the present work presents some evidences of the cultural implications, looked from the prism of cultural dimensions. A short revision of the theme was briefly analyzed and discussed under the light of the presented theoretical references.

This paper investigates a Universitys pricing process, comparing two different accounting approaches: traditional cost accounting and Theory of Constraints. Relying on concepts from the Theory of Constraints, this paper applies the principles of the Thinking Process and Throughput Accounting to review the current approach to this process. As a result, the paper evaluates the dynamics behind such processes and, based on throughput accounting, presents a new approach in tackling this.

This chapter addresses the central concepts of Design Science, as well as the history and evolution of this science over time. The main authors who criticize traditional science and propose the use of Design Science to guide research focused on problem solving and artifact designing are cited.

Studies of the problems of implementation report that a major portion of strategies are not implemented. While strategy implementation is itself a subject worthy of study, the implementation context poses specific challenges like higher education institutions (HEIs). The HEI context is one of heightened competition. Accordingly, this study investigates what factors influence the transformation of whatever strategic intentions exist into whatever strategic actions are taken. A case study was conducted at an HEI in southern Brazil. The study presents elements relating to factors that may influence processes leading to the implementation of strategic intentions. The study sought to contribute by providing a model that explicitates possible relationships among factors that impact implementation.
