Purpose – The paper aims to present a case of integration between process engineering and the thinking process of the theory of constraints (TP‐TOC) through the analysis of an organizations processes, pointing out the complementary aspects between the two theories and their benefits for the organization.Design/methodology/approach – The paper has used an Institution of Higher Education as its case study. The research has started by identifying the processes of the institution and choosing one to model according to the process engineering approach. The process was then analyzed through the elaboration of the current reality tree technique. After the analysis, the evaporating clouds technique was applied in order to breach the assumptions that were avoiding the problems to be solved. Finally, the process has been redesigned based on the results of the previous steps.Findings – The analysis of this case contributes towards understanding and identifying the causes of the current problems in the studied proce...

– The purpose of this paper is to present a case of integration between the processes modeling by using the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and the Thinking Process of the Theory of Constraints (TP-TOC) through the analysis of productive processes of an organization, indicating the complementary aspects between them and their benefits to the organization. , – The paper uses a company of the Brazilian automotive industry as the administering site. The research began by identifying the organizations processes and choice of a family of products to model according to the VSM approach. The integrated view between the losses in the process (VSM) and the unwanted effects of the adding value process were analyzed by using the Current Reality Tree. After the analysis, different improvement procedures are proposed based on the lean principles. Finally, a work plan is presented based on the previous steps aiming to achieve the proposed future state. , – The analysis of this case helps to understand and identify the causes of the current problems in the processes studied, providing an integrated view between the losses in the process and the prioritization of steps for the elimination of such losses. The approach in its initial administration was robust and the solution steps were promising. By integrating these approaches, it was possible to verify improvement opportunities by identifying the losses and the basic causes that sustain the unwanted effects in the processes at the same time. , – The study proposes an approach that enables a systematic and systemic analysis of the processes at organizations through the combined use of process modeling through the VSM and TP-TOC. Simultaneously, the losses in the processes and the unwanted effects are identified. Thus, through the construction of an effect-cause-effect robust logic, both losses in particular and the unwanted effects in general can be prioritized in order to maximize the improvement efforts in the processes.

This paper investigates a Universitys pricing process, comparing two different accounting approaches: traditional cost accounting and Theory of Constraints. Relying on concepts from the Theory of Constraints, this paper applies the principles of the Thinking Process and Throughput Accounting to review the current approach to this process. As a result, the paper evaluates the dynamics behind such processes and, based on throughput accounting, presents a new approach in tackling this.

Several methodologies can be applied to the process of new product development. They focus mainly in a sequence of logical steps, applied by an individual or team, based on project scope. The current organizational context requires a process of developing products that contemplate this dynamism experienced. In this sense, this research applies Systems Thinking (SENGE, 2012) to the process of developing a new undergraduate technological course at a university, searching for launch analysis in time and space, identifying the systemic impacts of the new course. The study was carried out following the logic of Design Science Research (BAYAZIT, 2004). Herewith, the methodology of Systems Thinking - Scenario Planning (ANDRADE et al., 2006) was applied to a group of professors and researchers at the university who participated in the development of this undergraduate technological course.

This paper proposes the implementation of a mix optimization tool for the beef sector, particularly for meat packing plants. The implementation of a mix optimization tool involves different areas of the organization, since this is a systemic tool for creating a market-oriented master production plan based on aggregate finite capacities, which optimizes the companys profitability. The article discusses the dimensions involved in the implementation of such a project and the main benefits resulting from it.

Additive Manufacturing adoption has been growing in adoption in the last decades, holding the potential to fundamentally transform traditional production systems. Yet, its prospected impact on Production Systems and Operations Strategy is controversial. This article contributes to this debate by examining and summarizing the prospected impact of Additive Manufacturing on Production Systems, in the light of the Competitive Dimensions through a Systematic Literature Review. In particular, this paper organises this debate by highlighting the specific impacts prospected by the literature for each competitive dimension.

This paper proposes a method of Integrated Process Simulation (MIPS), which considers the dynamic, stochastic and systemic characteristics of mining operations to support investment decisions in this industry. This MIPS supports development of a Decision Support System (DSS) that considers product quality, process productivity and production costs. A case study is described that used the MIPS to make better investment decisions. The MIPS has proven, in practice, to be effective in several applications; for example, in defining the maintenance policy for critical equipment in an iron ore concentration plant; the process for removing impurities and simulating the companys budget to evaluate the viability of different business plans.
