O livro esta dividido em duas partes. A primeira parte e introdutoria, contendo 3 capitulos.

The chapter signalizes the importance of the research on Nature of Science (NOS), illustrating how it is maturing in Brazil. The work reports on the procedure employed during the elaboration of a contextualized instrument using Ecology as a model for investigating NOS conceptions among Biological Science undergraduates. The authors propose orientation and principles that contribute toward research procedures, justifying the epistemological and methodological decisions. They also present strategies used for evaluating instrument efficacy, with a question grid constructed, in addition to the procedure and the principles adopted. This strategy furnished an explicit and critical manner of creating new questionnaires that deepened the analysis of the students’ conceptions of NOS.

The researcher Sibel Erduran gave us a brief interview and shared her ideas about Science Education research. We talked about the theoretical choices she made, to develop the model of the Nature of Science that she used in her recent studies; the contribution of several research topics to the production of knowledge about Science Education; and, her thoughts concerning the different research methodologies used in Science Education. We discussed the researcher’s opinions about the consequences of maintaining traditional strategies in Science Education, and what attitudes could be adopted by researchers and teachers to reduce the gap between research and practice in Science Education.

The results of a study on conceptions of the nature of science (NOS) among Biology undergraduate students are presented here. Four factors potentially associated with the conceptions of this public were statistically tested: educational stage, course type (for pre-service biology teachers or biologists-in-training), contact with meta-scientific themes, and participation in science initiation. The participants were 691 students from 14 Brazilian universities, who answered a contextualized questionnaire about research in Ecology. There was no variation in conceptions between the different educational stages neither from contact with meta-scientific themes, nor participation in scientific initiation. However, undergraduates attending only teacher-training courses presented less-informed NOS conceptions when compared with two other groups, one formed only by biologists-in-training and the other by a combination of biologistsin-training and teaching-training students. Among the 11 investigated aspects of NOS, the students presented less-informed conceptions about those addressing instrumentation and experimental practices. The discussion was directed to certain implications associated with the scenario presented.
