Importance of Internet of Things and Big Data in Building Smart City and What Would Be Its Challenges

Manan Bawa; Dagmar Caganova; Ivan Szilva; Daniela Spirkova

Cities are regarded as the backbone of the country’s economy and sustainability. To make a city ‘smart’, we need to build upon the strategies which could mitigate city’s current issues and avert future problems which are driven by the urban society and its rapid expansion. According to the UN urbanization report (2011), urban cities occupy 2 % of the earth’s total area and still they are responsible for the 70 % of the global energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases. The cities will need to attend to these global facts and take upon bigger challenges of fulfilling the essential needs of water, food and shelter, providing necessary public services like utility, security, and mobility and importantly managing scare resources. IoT and big data with their innovating techniques and advancing technology provides those critical tools which helps to address these topics and lay down the foundation for next generation smart cities.

Smart Housing in Sustainable Development

Daniela Spirkova; Dagmar Cagáňová

Reducing the energy consumption is one of the pillars of sustainable development. In European scale is consumed nearly 40 % of power on operation of buildings because we spend 90 % of our time inside the buildings. Reducing energy consumption of buildings can be considered as the basis for innovative solutions for housing construction and rehabilitation of housing stock in the future which also generates significant user experience - ensuring a healthy indoor environment with an optimal design of the building.‬ Paper presents an interesting solution of energy saving rooftop extensions - SOLTAG concept, which is the result of collaboration of experts from several countries including Slovakia.‬

The rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) has provided innovative solutions to reduce traffic accidents caused by fatigue driving. When drivers are in bad mood or tired, their vigilance level decreases, which may prolong the reaction time to emergency situation and lead to serious accidents. With the help of mobile sensing and mood-fatigue detection, drivers’ moodfatigue status can be detected while driving, and then appropriate measures can be taken to eliminate the fatigue or negative mood to increase the level of vigi‐ lance. This paper presents the basic concepts and current solutions of moodfatigue detection and some common solutions like mobile sensing and cloud computing techniques. After that, we introduce some emerging platforms which designed to promote safe driving. Finally, we summarize the major challenges in mood-fatigue detection of drivers, and outline the future research directions.

Eco-Innovation in Manufacturing Process in Automotive Industry

Martin Spirko; Daniela Spirkova; Dagmar Caganova; Manan Bawa

One of the current problems of the global nature is environmental pollution caused by industrial production. Nowadays, we know many advanced hi-tech materials and production methods in the car industry, but when it comes to such innovations, the environment is often forgotten. Therefore it is necessary to find a solution that technological innovations in automobiles will go hand in hand with innovations of emission reductions in manufacturing process. One of ways to achieve a reduction of emissions and prevent leakage of harmful substances is to change the structure of the different principles in the production process (substitute auxiliary compounds, change amount of the compounds, the expansion of the recycling process). The aim of this paper is to highlight the innovation of the manufacturing processes in the automotive industry in order to reduce emissions and save the environment and partially point out also the innovated products of the manufacturing process.

Economic Aspects of Land Grabbing in the Connection with Development Projects

Daniela Spirkova; Dagmar Cagáňová; Manan Bawa

The long-term problem in Slovakia is the seizure of agricultural land for the purpose of implementation of development projects. Factors contributing to land grabbing and occupancy of land were and are mainly due to the need for new residential, industrial and commercial sites as well as transport infrastructure. The Slovak Republic is one of the transition countries, which since 1990 has transferred to a market economy. Subsequent positive legislative changes and the development of new economic instruments in Slovakia has increased interest of foreign companies in business development activities. The consequences of uncontrolled construction boom is reflected in seizure of quality agricultural land for the construction of development projects and the subsequent formation of negative externalities.

Public Real Estate Management System in the Procedural Approach – A Case Study of Poland and Slovakia

Marta Gross; Ryszard Źróbek; Daniela Spirkova

Abstract Public real estate management is performed according to country-specific procedures. However, there are some features which are common for all post-socialist countries. It may be possible to implement and transfer into the Polish system the good management practice which has been developed by leading countries. On the other hand, Poles may have a chance to become acquainted with the rules governing public real estate management in other countries and to identify some practices which ought to be avoided. There is no need to implement faithfully those procedures which in other countries have been recognized as generally inadequate or inefficient and have been replaced by new solutions. This pertains to some principal components of the real estate management system. The aim of the paper has been to present public real estate management systems in Poland and Slovakia in the context of good governance, and to suggest some indicators for assessing the procedures in these systems in terms of their efficiency.

Great prospects are in store for the small and medium agro-business enterprises and consequently, for the size and relevance of the agricultural sector in the Korca District. During the last years the production of fruit tree has intensified greatly and this has put the farmers in front of new challenges for their activity. In this respect marketing has acquired a great emphasis, whose role is becoming even more important. This material aims to analyze some of the alternative marketing which can be used to gain a competitive advantage. The methodology of the study includes gathering secondary data and the study of literature in this field.
