Cases of sudden death in cattle were associated with the consumption of Amorimia (Mascagnia) exotropica and occurred in six ranches located in the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul and the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Affected cattle were found dead with no history of previous clinical signs, or showed muscular tremors, falls, paddling, opistotonus, panting, and lateral recumbence after being induced to move, few minutes before death. Most cases were recorded between May and August. Nine cattle were necropsied and main gross findings were oral mucosae slightly cyanotic (3/9), mild to intermediate hydropericardium (3/9), epicardial petechiae and ecchymoses (5/9), clot within the left ventricle (4/9), lung edema (5/9), apart of abomasal and small intestinal reddened mucosa (6/9). Histologically, there was myocardial coagulation necrosis (9/9), which was characterized by cellular retraction, enhanced cytoplasmic eosinophilia, lack of cytoplasmic striations, intracytoplasmic vacuoles, nuclear piknosis, intranuclear vacuoles, chromatin marginalization and occasional nuclear karyorrhexis and karyolysis. There also were interstitial edema (3/9) and interstitial inflammatory infiltrate (mainly mononuclear) (7/9) in the heart, apart of multifocal vacuolar-hydropic degeneration in the epithelial cells of the distal convoluted tubules associated with pyknotic and eccentric nuclei in the kidneys of three cattle.

Gross changes in spleen size and shape are frequently recognized in dogs, and splenectomy is the usual measure adopted in such cases. This study includes the changes observed in spleen samples excised from dogs. Cases were evaluated on the basis of general, clinical, and histopathological findings. In the 2000-2010 period, 9085 samples of canine tissues were evaluated, 179 (2%) of which were taken from total surgical spleen removal. The mean age of dogs studied was 9.9 years. A conclusive diagnosis was obtained in 173 spleen samples, of which 120 (69.3%) were neoplastic disorders and 53 (30.6%), non-neoplastic diseases. Malignant changes corresponded to 92.5% (111/120) of the neoplastic cases, and benign ones to 7.5% (9/120). The main changes observed in spleen samples were hemangiosarcoma 44.1% (79/179), nodular lymphoid hyperplasia 20.1% (36/179), fibrosarcoma 10.6% (19/179), hemangioma 3.9% (7/179), and immune-mediated hemolytic diseases 3.9% (7/179), apart of different metastatic neoplasms 3.3% (6/179).

Two outbreaks of poisoning by selenium in swine in southern Brazil are described. Piglets were affected in the post-weaning period, between 27 and 22 days, with mortality rates ranging from 16% to 15.3% (Outbreak 1 and 2 respectively). The pigs had focal symmetrical poliomielomalacia and hoof lesions, which were initially characterized by a reddish line at the coronary band that evolved in surviving pigs to release of the hooves. Clinical signs were observed after six days (Outbreak 1) and 30h (Outbreak 2) after the introduction of feed with high selenium content. The appearance of the signs was abrupt, characterized by gait and progressing to paralysis of the hind limbs and later to tetraparesis. Macroscopically, in some animals there were yellow circular foci with darker areas restricted to the ventral horn of the gray matter in the cervical and lumbar intumescence. Microscopically, these areas correspond to gray matter malacia, characterized by microcavitation, neuronal loss, chromatolysis, neuronophagia, infiltrating Gitter cells, microgliosis, Alzheimer’s type II astrocytes and proliferation of endothelial cells which were labeled by immunohistochemistry (IHC) as von Willebrand factor. Also in the second outbreak, two pigs showed diffuse vacuolation of the cytoplasm of neurons and in one pigxa0 gemistocytic astrocytes were observed. In IHC for GFAP astrocytosis and astrogliosis was observed. Besides those spinal changes in two pigs symmetrical polioencephalomalacia in the brainstem was found. In feed samples, 3.38ppm (Outbreak 1) and 154ppm (Outbreak 2) of Se/kg were detected, and in liver samples higher dosages than 3.34ppm (range from 3.34 to 10ppm) were found. In Outbreak 2, 44 days after the withdrawal of the diet, the euthanasia of six pigs was performed to monitor liver selenium levels (two controls and four surviving pigs per outbreak); all had normal levels of selenium in the liver.

Chronic cardiac insufficiency was associated with a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in a cow. An eight-year-old cow developed a progressive condition (over a period of three months) characterized by an enhanced abdominal volume, reluctance to move, a positive jugular pulse, watery diarrhea and death. At necropsy, moderate subcutaneous edema and an enhanced hepatic lobular pattern were observed. A 23x20x11 cm firm, grayish-white mass adhered to and infiltrated the right atrium. Multiple firm, yellowish-white nodules of 0.5 to 12 cm in diameter were diffusely scattered in the epicardium and parietal pericardium. Histologically, the tumor was poorly circumscribed with foci of infiltration of the myocardium. The neoplastic cells had two major histologic patterns, Antoni types A and B. Within occasional foci, pleomorphic cells with an epithelioid appearance were present in addition to multinucleated cells with periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-positive cytoplasmic globules. Foci of cartilaginous and granular differentiations were interspersed among the neoplastic cells. Multiple vessels presented wall hyalinization and tumoral embolus. Large necrotic foci with mineralization and cholesterol clefts were also observed. Immunohistochemically, the tumor was positive for S100 protein, vimentin and neuron-specific enolase labeling.

Thirteen horses and one mule from four regions of Brazil with clinical and histological diagnosis of rabies were analyzed. The clinical course lasted four days, with motor incoordination, paresis and paralysis of the legs, and decubitus. The main histopathological findings were lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis and non-suppurative meningomyelitis associated with characteristic Negri bodies in 64.28% (9/14) cases, mainly in the cervical spinal cord and in Purkinje neurons of the cerebellum. In 55.55% (5/9), the animals examined were positive by for the fluorescent antibody test for rabies. All animals were positive in immunohistochemistry for rabies, whose immunolabeling were more evident in the temporal cortex, occipital cortex and cervical spinal cord. Immunohistochemistry procedure was essential to confirm all cases of rabies in the equids.

Lightning strike may cause sporadic deaths of animals that have been exposed to high-voltage electric currents during thunderstorms. Four healthy adult cattle from two herds were found dead next to eucalypt trees immediately after storms in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. There were recent burns and loose barks on the trunks of the trees, apart numerous branches and leaves scattered on the ground under the canopy of the trees. No gross or microscopic lesions were observed. In addition, there was no evidence of any toxic or infectious disease. These findings suggest that lightning strike caused the death of those animals.

The paper addresses the epidemiologic data of the death of pigs during the period of 2002 to 2009 following the ingestion of botulinum neurotoxin type C. This neurotoxin was present in food residues originating from restaurant and hotel kitchens, stored in barrels without shelter from the sun and administered in a collective trough without prior thermal treatment. Animals which died at different ages showed clinical signs of botulism characterized by flaccid paralysis, weight loss, anorexia, weakness, lack of coordination, locomotion difficulties with the evolution of lateral recumbency with involuntary urination and defecation. No alterations were observed at postmortem and histological examination. The bioassay with serum neutralization in mice was carried out on samples of intestinal contents from pigs affected and revealed the presence of large quantities of botulinum toxin type C.

Bianca Tessele; Andréia Vielmo; Welden Panziera; Danilo Carloto Gomes; Claudio S.L. Barros

Eosinophilic myositis is a relatively rare inflammatory condition affecting striated muscle of cattle and sheep. It has been usually associated with degenerating cysts of Sarcocystis spp., mainly S. cruzi, although this protozoan occurs in the myofibers of almost every cattle without provoking an inflammatory reaction. This paper reports the gross and histopathological findings of eosinophilic myositis in three cattle slaughtered for meat production for human consumption. Grossly lesions were pale yellow, occasionally with a greenish hue, 2-6mm spots or strikes in the myocardium of the three cattle and in the masseter muscle of one of them. Microscopically there were granulomatous lesions surrounding a core of dead and degenerating eosinophils and occasional fragment components of Sarcocystis. Immunohistochemistry performed with a policlonal anti-Neospora caninum antibody in the myocardium of one of the cattle marked intact cysts in normal myofibers and intralesional fragments of disrupted cyst amidst areas with strong inflammatory reaction. This latter finding corroborates the opinion of those in favor of Sarcocystis spp. playing a role in the causation of eosinophilic myositis.

Cases of acute copper intoxication in Santa Ines sheep are described. The disease occurred on a farm in Rio Grande do Sul. Three ewes that had recently lambed and that were fed cattle diet became severely ill and died one week after ingestion of a commercial mineral mix for beef cattle. The sheep showed anorexia, lateral and sternal recumbency, fasciculation and muscle stiffness and death. At necropsy from one of these sheep, the main changes were moderate hepatomegaly, prominent hepatic lobular pattern, and multifocal randomly distributed erosions and ulcerations on the abomasal mucosa. Histological evaluation of the liver showed marked centrilobular hepatocellular necrosis; diffuse hepatocyte swelling predominantly in the periportal area, and a few Kupffer cells contained cytoplasmic pigment granules. The diagnosis was based on the clinical history, necropsy and histopathologic findings, and confirmed by the high copper concentrations detected in the liver, feed, and mineral mix samples.
