Technology and material design in PVDF protected thermoplastic substrates

David Silagy; Philippe Bussi; Gilles Marot

Abstract Kynar ® polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) multilayers technology aims at improving a commodity plastic substrate with a high performance polymer as a protective topcoat. The concept of multilayers technology to improve the performances of existing polymers is well established today. The well-known processability of Kynar ® on conventional equipments makes it a perfect candidate for these applications. This paper deals with the performances of various multilayers constructions in order to illustrate the solutions that can be obtained using Kynar ® . A particular focus on the intrinsic properties of Kynar ® regarding mainly outdoor weathering and chemical resistance is performed, as well as the numerous melt processing technologies achievable with Kynar ® .
