Intertemporal market effect on gender earnings differentials: lawyers in Canada, 1970-80

David K. Foot; David Stager

The conventional methodology for decomposition of cross-sectional earnings differentials is extended to include a ‘market effect’ on intertemporal changes in earnings and to analyse the changes in gender differentials over time. Differential Effects of Advanced Degrees on Lawyers' Earnings.

David Stager; David K. Foot

Abstract An advanced degree is found to have a positive effect on the earnings of lawyers who are in private practice in Canada, but a negative effect for lawyers in government service, after controlling for other employment and personal factors. It is concluded that the positive productivity effect of an advanced degree outweighs the negative career interruption effect in the competitive market of private practice, but that the net effect is reversed in government service.
