Cuidadoras informais de Portugal: vivências do cuidar de idosos

Maria João Fernandes Marques; Helena Teixeira; Dayse Neri de Souza

The informal caregiver arises from the need to care for sick and elderly in their homes with the task of assisting with medications, hygiene and food without payment. This kind of aid raises overhead in physical, psychological and financial. From the quality of care emphasizes the need to look at and assist caregivers in helping hard their patients, which most are elderly. The aim is to present the perceptions experienced by informal caregivers, as well as recognition of the same burdens that affect them holistically: emotional, physical, financial and the importance of developing coping strategies through training on how to better care. The interviewed in the research belong to the North and Central Portugal, answer to the survey adapted from The Zarit Burden Interview. The interviews were analyzed with the support of NVivo 8 software. The data indicate that informal caregivers face more types of physical and emotional than financial burden. However, they stressed that despite the difficulties like taking care of their families. About being invited to participate in training on how to best care, some have confirmed their interest. We found that informal caregivers are lacking of an education that enables them to better care for preventing unsafe consequences.

Research through Design: Qualitative Analysis to Evaluate the Usability

António Pedro Costa; Francislê Neri de Sousa; António Moreira; Dayse Neri de Souza

The present need to identify and understand non-measurable/non-quantifiable of the user experience with software has been the moto for may researchers in the area of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) to adopt qualitative methods. On the other hand, the use of qualitative analysis to support software has been growing. The integration of these types of tools in research is accompanied by an increase in the number of software packages available. Depending on the design and research questions, researchers can explore various solutions available in the market. Thus, it is urgent to ensure that these tools, apart from containing the necessary functionality for the purposes of research projects, are also usable. This study presents an assessment of the usability of the qualitative data analysis software webQDA® (version 2.0). To assess its usability, Content Analysis was used. The results indicate that the current version is “acceptable” in terms of usability, as users, in general, show a positive perception is perceived from users with completed PhDs as compared to those who are still doing their PhDs; no relevant differences can be found between the views obtained from different professional or research areas, although a more positive assessment may be drawn from Education and Teaching. Suggestions for future studies are put forward, even though we recognise that, in spite of most studies on usability defining quantitative metrics, the present study is offered as a contribution that aims to show that qualitative analysis has a great potential to deepen various dimensions of usability and functional and emotional interrelationships that are not by any means quantifiable.

webQDA 2.0 Versus webQDA 3.0: A Comparative Study About Usability of Qualitative Data Analysis Software

António Pedro Costa; Francislê Neri de Souza; António Moreira; Dayse Neri de Souza

Communication and Information Technology (ICT) applied to qualitative research has proved to be an asset for quality, improvement and innovation of this research area. Having emerged in 2010 webQDA is an online software that has supported the data analysis of several areas of research such as education, health, sociology, psychology, social sciences and others fields that need qualitative analysis. This study presents an assessment of the usability of the qualitative data analysis software webQDA® (version 2.0) in comparison with its new version webQDA 3.0. To assess its usability, the System Usability Scale (SUS) was used. The results indicate that there is still room and potential for improvement of webQDA 3.0, as expected‚ once it is still being improved. It is encouraging to know that more and more researchers find it not only useful but easy to use, even if demanding (which is positive from our point of view)‚ in the way it “forces” researchers to adopt a more inquisitive approach to the data they deal with in their qualitative studies. Suggestions for future studies and improvement of the software are put forward.

Qualitative research in health: contributions to education, profession, family, citizenship and social interaction

Dayse Neri de Souza; Marília Rua; Ellen Oliveira; António Pedro Costa

Dayse Neri de Souza1, Marília Rua2, Ellen Synthia Fernandes Oliveira3, António Pedro Costa4 The articles published in the current Special Edition were selected after a rigorous evaluation. Despite being chosen because of their accuracy and quality of the studies conducted, not because of the subjects addressed, the themes that have become enriching for this publication were clearly cohesive and sequential. Being qualitative studies, the articles focus, as recommended by experts in the field1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, on the duty to reveal “truths”, values, beliefs, representations, habits, deep knowledge of their experiences and the way people construct meanings and relationships. It is indeed important to note that over the last years qualitative studies in health have achieved their due recognition. The path studies of this nature have walked is notoriously difficult. Authors like Sarma2 have pointed out the challenging path that encounters misleading allegations and the lack of understanding of the paradigmatic differences between the two research types Quantitative and Qualitative. According to the author, qualitative studies are accused of being mere story tales, anecdotes and researchers’ personal impressions, labelled as non-scientific due to the fact that their results cannot be generalised. The discussion about qualitative studies not being able to be generalised is an old one, preceding the golden years of the 1920s with Malinowski7, who has become a pioneer in his area by describing the collection of field data in an organised and systematic way, and his contributions to the discussion. In spite of the sharp criticism, one should reflect on the perspectives given by authors such as Deslandes and Assis8, and Amado9, who note the need for these studies to comply with their own characteristics but also the accuracy and quality of science. Boavida and Amado10, and Deslandes and Assis8 warn us that the compliance of reliability, validity and credibility criteria in qualitative studies is a great advantage that “allows a greater reliability of its constructs to the empirical reality and to the experience of the individuals surveyed”8:204. Facing a slow but steady and robust growth, important contributions of qualitative studies conducted by health professionals have been published in several health journals11,12. The themes of the articles in the current number range from health courses and training of doctors and nurses to health and disease, family experience and suffering, eating habits, the role and importance of social networks for nursing and family, as well as nurses’ experiences and views and the voice of the community health agent. Within the scope of health training based on the curricula and adaptation to reality, the article Understanding the national syllabus in light of the overarching training principals in health care in Brazil indicated an analysis of the pedagogical projects, highlighting the guiding principles of training in Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine, Nutrition and Odontology courses, from the technical and ethical-social factors to professional practice and interdisciplinarity. In this respect, the results of the study Analysis of teaching-service integration activities performed in health courses at the Federal University of Bahia revealed the importance of inEDITORIAL

Pedagogical traditions in EU universities: challenges and opportunities

Isabel Huet; Ana Vitória Baptista; Dayse Neri de Souza; Diogo Casanova; Jeanne Schreurs; Danguole Rutkauskiene

Both the Lisbon Strategy and the Bologna Process have brought enormous challenges to higher education (HE). The universities in the European Union have already implemented the Bologna guidelines and those of the neighbouring countries were forced to follow them. Taking this into account, we intend to present an output of the first phase of the European project Western/Eastern Teacher Education Network (WETEN). In this paper, we will focus the situation of four European universities on the implementation level of some Bologna guidelines, accordingly to three specific dimensions: 1) the development of a learner centred educational model; 2) the implementation of ICT enhanced learning; 3) HE teachers training.
