This paper proposes framework based on Black Box Testing methodology which is used for automatic testing of Set-top boxes (STB). Proposed framework for automatic testing can be used for functional testing, regression testing, performance testing and stress testing of STB. Complete system for automatic testing consists of web tool responsible for requirement and test management along with stand-alone application for execution of automatic test cases in form of scripts written in Python programming language. Paper gives an overview of the whole system for automatic testing along with list of framework functions and their usage for creating automatic test cases.

The most recent requests for interoperability between the different devices within a home automation system have brought IP-based protocols to the attention in this area. However, a number of hurdles need to be overcome so that the IP connection to home devices could become enabled, the most important being the requests for a large address space and low power consumption. In this paper we present a solution of a home gateway device with the ability to interact with IPv6-enabled home devices over 6LoWPAN, with regard to the increased address space and low power consumption, respectively. Additionally, the gateway supports the traditional IPv4 interfacing over WiFi and Ethernet. UPnP over IPv6 is fully enabled so that all the devices can be easily found by UPnP discovery from any node in the network. Finally, the gateway populates the discovered devices to a cloud server, which in turn enables a variety of web applications for home control to interact to home devices by using asynchronous API calls.

The use of standard HTTP protocol, within complex systems, may lead to system-wide high latency. The increased number of periodically sent request containing information for updating a clients state on the server can cause a system choke. Websocket protocol acts as an upgrade to the HTTP protocol and functions in a two-way duplex regime, thus the number of request is greatly reduced when compared to standard HTTP. This paper evaluates and measures the performance of a client-server configuration that meets the modern security requirements, whilst providing two-way communication and scalability regarding the number of client and server instances.

Some of the home automation solutions support user manageable extensions, although with numerous constraints: e.g. requirement for specific controller devices, operating system dependency, or platform specific programming knowledge for development. This approach results in closed policy of home automation systems and excludes independent developers from anticipating in their expansion. This paper provides a concept and implementation that overcomes these constraints by developing extensions using common Web technologies. It offers mechanism for users to configure their system with new functionality, by installing or removing extension modules from system in run-time. Extensions can be accessed and controlled from various personal devices independent from operating system through Web interface. The solution was validated through development and installation of application for smart devices control, based on modern Web technologies. Still, only basic programming knowledge is required for extension development, making it facile to novice developers.

The demand for a wide range of video and multimedia applications is growing extremely fast in recent years. In such a diverse usage of digital video, there is a need for reliable video quality assessment by different parties involved in video content delivery to end users. While video quality assessment methods are gaining quite considerable attention in scientific research, practical tools for video quality assessment are still rare. This article presents Picture Quality Meter, an application for real-time no-reference video artifact detection that can be used in different scenarios like video equipment testing, network monitoring, video hardware/software development and scientific research. The application has some unique features allowing user customization in terms of used no-reference methods, giving the user deeper insight into the obtained results and easier usage when dealing with in field video equipment testing.

The concept of cloud computing allowed for integration of vast variety of devices and services towards the provision of enhanced experience for consumers. In this paper techniques and a framework for the provisioning of personalization information to the users of set-top box applications are presented and evaluated. To provide personalized services, the framework utilizes cloud-computing concept and online profile of the user. Evaluation is performed within a personalized electronic program guide application.

Active exploitation of the previously proposed Set Top Box testing framework has given rise to new requirements such as remote monitoring of test execution. The system described in this paper is web-based and receives periodic updates of each registered test station, thus being a real-time web application. The system displays the video output of each tested device as an MJPEG stream. The large number of tested devices has lead us to explore and work around the modern browsers limitations of maximum number of active HTTP and WebSocket connections.

This paper presents a web based system for remote monitoring and control of set-top boxes. The goal of the proposed system is to provide flexible control over set-top box from remote location, in order to enable test engineers, test technicians and developers to remotely access set-top box and execute different tests on it. By using the proposed system it is possible to save resources and shorten the time needed for deployment of new settop boxes to the market.
