A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample of 1,061 students to determine the epidemiological profile of drug abuse among elementary and high school students in the State public school system in Greater Metropolitan Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil, in 1995. Results showed drug abuse among both male and female students (27.2% and 24.1%, respectively). Drug abuse was more common in students over 18 years of age (27.1%), with grade/age discrepancies (70.7%), with higher classroom absenteeism (44.6%), and with higher social economic levels (A + B = 34.5%). The most frequently abused drugs among male students were alcohol (81.8%), solvents (18.6%), and marijuana (6.0%). Early alcohol abuse was also common (12.1 ±3.6 years). In addition to alcohol (78.6%) and tobacco (29.0%), the substances most commonly consumed by students were solvents (14.9%), anxiolytics (6.0%), and amphetamines (4.8%). The 1995 epidemiological profile of drug abuse among elementary and high school students in the State public school system in Cuiaba was similar data from nationwide surveys conducted in 1987, 1989, and 1993.

This article presents an evaluation of educational activities developed for adolescents from a school located in an area impacted by inadequate disposal of solid waste through the comparison of the previous and posterior knowledge of these students on pollution and health effects. This cross-sectional study was conducted in two phases including respectively 84 and 93 elementary school students from the rural area in the city of Cuiaba, 2013. Data on the school and the concepts of pollution were obtained through a self-reported questionnaire. Chi-square test was performed for statistical analysis. There was a significant increase in the knowledge about environmental pollution after the implementation of the educational activities. We concluded, although the political and pedagogical project of the school developed environmental themes, additional activities should be implemented for the association of these environmental hazards with the human health among the scholars.

This study was done from March to August 2013 and examined the association between smoking and family aspects in a sample of 604 patients from the Julio Muller University Hospital, Federal University of Mato Grosso in Cuiaba, Brazil. A questionnaire about bio-demographic, family history and smoking aspects was applied, which was defined according to the criteria of the Ministry of Health. Bivariate analysis with chi-square and Fishers exact and Poisson regression was used with the association measures of prevalence ratios with confidence interval (CI) of 95%.The prevalence of smoking was 18.2%. It was observed that the exposure factors associated with statistic significance were: paternal physical abuse, ie, the father figure (PR 1.16; 95%CI 1.03-1.31), education (RP 1.13; 95%CI 1.06-1.20), and dead parents (RP 1.12; 95%CI 1.05-1.20); and as a protective factor to be white (PR 0.91; 95%CI 0.85-0.97) and living with parents (RP 0.75; 95%CI 0.69-0.82). Results indicate that the prevalence of smoking in the studied population is associated with established relationships in the family. This study suggests that family preventive educative actions must be carried in order to achieve changes in smoking behavior.
