Semantic Web services facilitate activities including automatic discovery and composition of Web services. Research initiatives such as WSMO have been developing specifications for this technology. This paper describes a model for composition of Web services. The proposed model complements the WSMO orchestration in IRS-III, a framework for semantic Web services based on WSMO specification. We present a tool based on the above model that supports a user-guided interactive composition approach, by recommending component Web services according to the composition context.

Despite the importance of analytical tools to organisations, they still lack the inference power needed to solve the requests of decision makers in a flexible way. Our approach aims at integrating business semantics into analytical tools by providing semantic descriptions of exploratory functionalities and available services. We propose an architecture for business intelligence, which uses semantic Web technology based on IRS-III. In addition, we present OntoDSS, a prototype tool based on this architecture that illustrates some of the functionalities that may be provided to decision makers within an application scenario

One of the major challenges in Semantic Web Service (SWS) technology is the improvement of the services matching process. This challenge is a critical issue to promote systems interoperability in the context of Scienti Network (SN), an international knowledge network in Science & Technology (S&T) [1]. We have been working on a framework to tackle this problem in the context of IRS-II SWS infrastructure. This framework (SeGOV), comprehends a set of ontologies to describe services in functional layers in order to allow their matching and improve their capabilities.

Fierce competition in the digital economy and increasing volume of available data are forcing organizations to find efficient ways to gain valuable information and knowledge to improve the efficiency of their business processes. Business Intelligence (BI) solutions offer the means to transform data to information and derive knowledge through analytical tools in order to support decision making. Analytical tools should support decision makers to find information quickly and enable them to make well-informed decisions.

This paper presents the semantic portals – an evolution of web portals, which are present in the so called semantic web. A semantic portal is a Knowledge Engineering tool that supports Knowledge Management, favoring integration, organization, search and dissemination of knowledge in an organization. The methodology progressed through the following stages: literature review, data analysis, synthesis and structuring of content. At the outset, it shows the evolution of web portals, distinguishing a traditional portal from a semantic one. Subsequently, the study discusses an ontology-based technique which allows knowledge representation in the semantic web, essential in semantic portals. Examples of using semantic portals are provided, in order to demonstrate their key benefits, such as: better information recovery, sharing and reuse of knowledge and resources, information and system integration, and service personalization. It was concluded, based in the literature review, the semantic portals have several advantages that can benefit organizations in Knowledge Management.
