Performance analysis of WA-DGNSS in Korea with the selection of reference stations

Deokhwa Han; Ho Yun; Changdon Kee

Wide area differential GNSS(WA-DGNSS) collects GPS measurements from the several reference stations and estimates 3-D satellite orbit error, satellite clock error, ionospheric delay. These correction messages are broadcasted to user, then user can have more accurate and reliable position estimates. The performance of WA-DGPS can be changed depending on the position of reference stations. To select proper reference stations, performance analysis with the change of reference stations is necessary. In this paper, changing the geographical location of reference stations, we carried out simulation based test and show the performance of WA-DGNSS in Korea.

A Preliminary Study of Korean Dual-Frequency SBAS

Ho Yun; Deokhwa Han; Changdon Kee

A Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) is a representative differential GNSS system, which is used for the navigation performance improvement of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) users. SBAS has been developed focusing on the securement of user integrity so that it can be used for the navigation in aviation fields. Accordingly, the development of SBAS has been completed, and it has been actively used in the United States, Europe, and Japan. As the new satellite of Global Positioning System (GPS) recently started to broadcast new civil signals (L5 frequency), the methods for improving user navigation performance in SBAS using this signal have also been studied. In Korea, to keep pace with these circumstances, full-scale SBAS development is expected to start in 2014, and studies on dual-frequency SBAS using L1/L5 frequencies will also be performed. In this study, before the full-scale development of dual-frequency SBAS in Korea, a simulation was performed to predict the performance and analyze the expected effects.

Improving performance of GPS satellite DCB estimation for regional GPS networks using long-term stability

Deokhwa Han; Dong-Uk Kim; Changdon Kee

Compensation for differential code bias (DCB) is necessary because it is the major source of errors in total electron content (TEC) measurements. The DCB estimation performance is degraded when only the regional GPS network is used. Because DCB estimation is highly correlated with ionospheric modeling, this degradation is particularly evident for measurements concentrated in an area of high TEC concentration. This study proposes a DCB estimation method that uses the long-term stability of the DCB to improve the estimation performance of the regional GPS network. We estimate satellite DCBs by assuming their constancy over seven months. This extended period increases the number of measurements used in DCB estimation and changes the local time distribution of collected measurements. As a result, the unbalanced distribution of specific ionospheric conditions disappears. Tests are performed using both global and regional networks, and the estimation performance is evaluated based on the position error and pseudorange residuals. First, the difference between the global and regional networks when using the conventional method is analyzed. Second, proposed methods are applied to regional networks. The proposed method can improve the DCB estimation performance, and the results are similar to those obtained using one-day global network data.

Accuracy Improvement of DGPS for Low-Cost Single-Frequency Receiver Using Modified Flächen Korrektur Parameter Correction

A differential global positioning system (DGPS) is one of the most widely used augmentation systems for a low-cost L1 (1575.42 MHz) single-frequency GPS receiver. The positioning accuracy of a low-cost GPS receiver decreases because of the spatial decorrelation between the reference station (RS) of the DGPS and the users. Hence, a network real-time kinematic (RTK) solution is used to reduce the decorrelation error in the current DGPS system. Among the various network RTK methods, the Flachen Korrektur parameter (FKP) is used to complement the current DGPS, because its concept and system configuration are simple and the size of additional data required for the network RTK is small. The FKP was originally developed for the carrier-phase measurements of high-cost GPS receivers; thus, it should be modified to be used in the DGPS of low-cost GPS receivers. We propose an FKP-DGPS algorithm as a new augmentation method for the low-cost GPS receivers by integrating the conventional DGPS correction with the modified FKP correction to mitigate the positioning error due to the spatial decorrelation. A real-time FKP-DGPS software was developed and several real-time tests were conducted. The test results show that the positioning accuracy of the DGPS was improved by a maximum of 40%.

Modeling of Ionospheric Delay for SBAS Using Spherical Harmonics Functions

Deokhwa Han; Ho Yun; Changdon Kee

In SBAS (satellite-based augmentation system), it is important to estimate ionospheric delay accurately to guarantee users accuracy and integrity. Grid based ionospheric models are generally used to estimate ionospheric delay for SBAS. In grid based model, SBAS broadcasts vertical ionospheric delays at the grid point, and users get their ionospheric delay by interpolating those values. Ionospheric model based on spherical harmonics function is another method to estimate ionospheric delay. This is a function based approach and spherical harmonics function is a 2-D fourier series, containing the product of latitude dependent associated Legendre functions and the sum of the longitude dependent sine and cosine terms. Using ionospheric delay measurements, coefficients for each spherical harmonics functions are estimated. If these coefficients are known, users can reconstruct ionospheric delay. In this paper, the authors consider the spherical harmonics based model and propose a ionospheric delay estimation strategy for SBAS that can be used to mitigate ionospheric delay estimation error, especially in storm condition. First, coefficients are estimated under initial order and degree. Then residual errors for each measurement are modeled by higher order and degree terms, then coefficients for these terms are estimated. Because SBAS message capacity is limited, in normal condition, initial order terms are only used to estimate ionospheric delay. If ionospheric storm is detected and there is need to mitigate the error, higher order terms are also used and error can be decreased. To compare the accuracy of spherical harmonics based model with grid based model, some post-processing test results are presented. Raw observation data is obtained from RINEX format and the root mean square (RMS) and max value of residual errors are presented.

Performance Evaluation of Ionosphere Modeling Using Spherical Harmonics in the Korean Peninsula

Deokhwa Han; Ho Yun; Changdon Kee

The signal broadcast from a GPS satellite experiences code delay and carrier phase advance while passing through the ionosphere, which causes a signal error. Many ionosphere models have been studied to correct this ionospheric delay error. In this paper, the ionosphere modeling for the Korean Peninsula was carried out using a spherical harmonics based model. In contrast to the previous studies, we considered a real-time ionospheric delay correction model using fewer number of basis functions. The modeling performance was evaluated by comparing with a grid model. Total number of basis functions was set to be identical to the number of grid points in the grid model. The performance test was conducted using the GPS measurements collected from 5 reference stations during 24 hours. In the test result, the modeling residual error was smaller than that of the existing grid model. However, when the number of measurements was small and the measurements were not evenly distributed, the overall trend was found to be problematic. For improving this problem, we implemented the modeling with additional virtual measurements.

Dong-Uk Kim; Deokhwa Han; Changdon Kee; Chul-soo Lee; Choong-hee Lee

In this paper, we verified accuracy of the satellite based augmentation system (SBAS) tropospheric delay correction model for the Korean region. We employed the precise data of the tropospheric zenith path delay (ZPD) which is provided by the international GNSS service (IGS). In addition, we compared the verification results with that of the Saastamoinen model and the Hopfield model. Consequently, the bias residual error of the SBAS tropospheric delay correction model is about 50 mm, whereas the Saastamoinen model and the Hopfield model are more accurate. This residual error by the tropospheric delay model can affect the SBAS user position accuracy, but there is no problem in SBAS accuracy requirement. If we modified the meteorological parameters for SBAS tropospheric model to appropriate in Korean weather environment, we can provide better SBAS service to the Korean user.

RAIM algorithm considering simultaneous multiple ramp failures

Ho Yun; Deokhwa Han; Changdon Kee; Jiyun Lee; Moon Beom Heo

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop and analyze a new multiple hypothesis receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) algorithm, which can handle simultaneous multiple ramp failures. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed algorithm uses measurement residuals and satellite observation matrices of several consecutive epochs for failure detection and exclusion. It detects failures by monitoring the error vector rather than a projection of the error vector. The algorithm assumes that magnitude of range errors can vary with time, while the conventional sequential multiple hypothesis RAIM algorithm assumes that range errors are constant biases. Findings – The algorithm can detect any instance of multiple failures, including failures that cannot be detected by the conventional RAIM algorithm. It can detect multiple failures with magnitudes of several tens of meters, even though the algorithm must solve an ill-conditioned problem. And it can also deal with ramp failures which cannot be detec...

Wide Area Differential GNSS(WA-DGNSS) was developed in order to improve the accuracy and integrity performance of GNSS. In this paper, overall structure of Pseudolite-Based Augmentation System(PBAS) and experimental methods which enables the post-processing test with commercial receiver will be described. For generating augmenting message, GPS measurement collected from five NDGPS reference stations were processed by reference station S/W and master station S/W. The accuracy of augmenting message was tested by comparing SP3, IONEX data. In the test, RF signal of user was collected and correction data were generated. After that, RF signal was broadcasted with pseudolite signal. Test was conducted using three commercial receiver and the performance was compared with MSAS and standalone user. From the position output of each receiver, it was shown that improved position was obtained by applying augmenting message.
