Diana Elvira Soto Arango; Aracely Forero Romero

This paper examines the course of events that created the current framework of the universities in Latin American and Caribbean in the late XXI century. This study arose from research conducted in the group HISULA, which has established a network of Latin American researchers who have reflected upon the university during 24 years. The aim of this study is to recognize the contribution of these research works from a diachronic vision of the university reality. In this context, we relied on the social history of education method, the paradigm developed by SHELA, and the prospective method. The first stage of this research focused on defining the present positioning of Latin American universities. With this purpose, we carried out a review of the major influences that have led to the current state of higher education institutions in the Latin American and Caribbean continent, from the different market contexts that point to globalization versus knowledge society, mediated by innovation. Second, it is located in the predominant curricular trends that influence learning and innovation processes and the role of technology evolution in the paths undertaken by Institutions of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean.Third, we analyze the opinions and ‘imaginaries’ of the directors of the Universidad Pedagogica y Tecnologica de Colombia, through five factors analysis, as a sample of regional university in Colombia. Research strategies focused on document review, such as legislation, reports, and interviews with UPTC directors who envisioned the institution from policies on quality and research, but did not present hypotheses about the future of the University;. Their concern focused on meeting the requirements arising from state regulation of the education sector. It is concluded that the market economy goes against the essence of the university as a public service for society, and ICT in teaching and learning processes have failed to spread humanistic education. The great challenge is to make the transition from institutional identity towards the identity of a Latin American and Caribbean university.

The pedagogical model of The Science Education Faculty is conceived at the Universidad Pedagogica y Tecnologica de Colombia on the humanistic approach, proposed since its inception with the direct antecedent of the Teacher college, originally named; Superior Normal School, in Colombia. The focus on the educational approach and the pedagogical models that underlie the faculty are established from the social history of education method, the imaginaries, and the qualitative analysis. It is concluded that the humanistic educational approach changed from Catholic to critical and keeps the principle of the integrality of the human being. An approximation to the current cognitive trend, located in the school of epistemological thought and leaned towards socio-critical models within an ethical code of principles, which are framed in the identity of the professional performance of the educator. It is proposed, in the approach to the critical pedagogical model, a balanced triad where the educator and the learner reach the focal point in the act of knowledge, this under the principle of dialogicity and mediated by social responsibility, emancipatory pedagogy and the happiness of the human being in the construction of peace in Colombia.

Carta a los Lectores

José Cortez Sic; Diana Elvira Soto Arango

This paper presents the results of the research conducted in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on life histories of a group of women teachers. The main objective focused on teachers training and practices. Historical and social methods for educational research were used, and the technique applied was narrative inquiry. The content analysis was carried out with the Atlas ti software, along with triangulation guided by expert advice; close attention was given to events affecting teachers, its relevance and the process of sharing this issues in order to understand the numerous changes in teaching practices, the current training scenarios, and their perspectives on the future from a collective imaginary. The findings expose that the teachers, involved in this research, present various training actions from colonial times to the present day, which have had great impact on their professional and personal lives. Education projection is evidenced towards 2020 with the necessary openness of meeting and dialogue with emerging ideals and aspirations within contexts having various sociocultural issues, where the main needs lie in ethnic groups integration and cultural identities recovery. There is still a long way to go and it will be safeguarded by those women teachers who are called “mama” by their charisma and teaching vocation.

Diana Elvira Soto Arango

Olegario Negrín Fajardo; Diana Elvira Soto Arango
