This article is a response to the proposal of L.M. Trevaskis (VT 59 [2009], p. 295-312). Taking into account the book of Leviticus as a whole, it suggests a different explanation to justify the location of chapter 24 in the canonical form of the book.

Major exegetical interest in the literary device of irony started only with the rise of new literary critical approaches. On this topic, Edwin M. Good (Irony in the Old Testament, Philadelphia, PA, 1965) seems to have been a precursor. The publication of Carolyn J. Sharps study (Irony and Meaning in the Hebrew Bible, Bloomington, IN, 2009) gives us the occasion to return to this multi-meaning concept, to show its relevance for interpreting the old Testament, and to examine the hermeneutical challenges within a larger postmodern perspective.

The current nature of the «jubilee» encourages us to reread Lev 25 according to its «spirit», that is to say according to its «letter» also. After having given an account of the research, especially historical, the text is analyzed in its unity and structure and is interpreted according to its conceptual coherence. The law is elaborated around three poles which are YHWH, the land and the people. By the means of the jubilee, the people is called to institutionalize in the land what God has done for them at the Exodus and in the desert. Mans reply prolongs the effectiveness of divine action; Gods blessing gives assurance to mans faith.
