The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of different oral chloral hydrate and dexmedetomidine doses used for sedation during electroencephalography (EEG) in children. One hundred sixty children aged 1 to 9 years with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II who were uncooperative during EEG recording or who were referred to our electrodiagnostic unit for sleep EEG were included to the study. The patients were randomly assigned into 4 groups. In groups D1 and D2, patients received oral dexmedetomidine doses of 2 and 3 µg/kg, respectively. In group C1 and C2, patients received oral chloral hydrate doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. The induction time was significantly shorter in group C2 compared with other groups (P = .000). The rate of adverse effects was significantly higher in group C2 compared with the dexmedetomidine groups (D1 and D2; P = .004). In conclusion, dexmedetomidine can be used safely for sedation during EEG in children.

The aims of the present study were to describe the characteristics of children receiving comprehensive dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia (DRGA) at a dental hospital in Turkey, and to evaluate dental treatment patterns and waiting times between examination and receiving GA for these children. The authors described the characteristics of children receiving comprehensive DRGA at a dental hospital in Turkey. A total of 441 patients′ records were included and were composed of 272 (61.7%) boys and 169 (38.3%) girls. Although most of the children (159, 54.1%) were aged between 3 and 5 (mean: 5.40 ± 2.00) years in the healthy children group (Group I), most of the special needs children (Group II) (85, 55.5 %) were aged between 6 and 11 years old (mean: 6.93 ± 3.13). Extreme non-cooperation, dental fear, and an excessive need for treatment were the major reasons for the use of comprehensive dental treatment under GA. The mean waiting times for treatment under GA were significantly shorter in ASA III, ASA IV and disabled children in ASA I and ASA II, compared to physically and mentally fit ASA I and ASA II children.

Hastaya eksizyonel biyopsi uygulanmistir.

Purpose: After mental nerve injury, several sensory disorders may occur. The alterations in sensation may differ from mild paresthesia to complete anesthesia, or neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain is a difficult clinical condition to manage. The aim of this study was to compare the analgesic effects of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) and cryoablation in an experimental mental nerve neuropathic pain model in rabbits. Materials and Methods: Fifteen rabbits were divided into three groups. One-third to one-half of the mental nerve was ligated with 4-0 silk sutures. In Group 1, a nonconducting PRF electrode was placed on the mental nerve for 6 min, whereas the mental nerve was exposed to PRF in Group 2. In Group 3, the cryoablation was processed. The responses to thermal and mechanical stimuli were measured at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th weeks. Results: There were no statistically significant differences among the groups for thermal withdrawal latency to heat stimulation in any weeks (P > 0.05). However, a significant difference was found between the groups (P < 0.05) in the 3rd and 4th weeks for mechanical withdrawal latency values. Conclusions: Both PRF and cryoablation therapies are successful in the treatment of experimentally induced mental nerve neuropathic pain in rabbits.

Objectives: To determine the role of hemogram parameters such as platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and the MPV/PLT ratio in predicting the risk of postoperative vomiting (POV) in children after tooth extraction under deep sedation. Methods: A total of 100 American Society of Anesthesiology Classification I and II pediatric patients who underwent tooth extraction procedures under a standard anesthetic method were included in the study between 2012 and 2014. The study took place at the Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Erciyes University, Erciyes, Turkey Fifty patients without POV (group 1) and 50 patients with POV (group 2) were retrospectively selected randomly from the records of 885 consecutive patients. Age, gender, duration of the operation, and preoperative hemogram findings were recorded. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of MPV (p<0.001), PLT (p=0.006), and MPV/PLT (p<0.001) ratio. Mean platelet volume and MPV/PLT ratio were higher in group 2, whereas PLT was higher in group 1. Conclusion: The PLT count, MPV, and MPV/PLT ratio may be used to predict POV in children.
