Prática esportiva e participação nas aulas de educação física: fatores associados em estudantes de Londrina, Paraná, Brasil

El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar los factores asociados a la practica deportiva y participacion en las clases de educacion fisica. La muestra consistio en 827 jovenes; se selecciono en dos etapas y estratifico por region en la ciudad de Londrina, Parana, Brasil. Se analizo la practica deportiva, participacion en las clases de educacion fisica y variables sociodemograficas, de comportamiento y ambientales. Los factores asociados a la participacion en las clases de educacion fisica fueron: sexo masculino, edad (10-13 anos), percepcion de actividad fisica igual o superior, practica deportiva, ejercicio en las clases y clases en pista deportiva. Para la practica deportiva, los factores asociados fueron: sexo masculino, edad (10-13 anos), percepcion de actividad fisica igual o superior, actividad fisica (≥ 7 horas/semana), participacion en las clases de educacion fisica, tener ≥ 10 amigos, practica deportiva con amigos y frecuencia de uso de las instalaciones. Estos factores deben ser considerados en programas de incentivos a la practica deportiva y participacion en las clases de educacion fisica.This study aimed to analyze factors associated with participation in sports and physical education. The sample consisted of 827 young people selected in two stages and stratified by neighborhood of Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. The study analyzed participation in sports and physical education in relation to socio-demographic, behavioral, and environmental variables. Factors associated with participation in physical education included: male gender, age (10-13 years), equal to high self-rated physical activity, participation in sports, moving around during classes, and having classes on the court. Factors associated with participation in sports were male gender, age (10-13 years), equal to high self-rated physical activity, physical activity (≥ 7 hours/week), participation in physical education, having ≥ 10 friends, participation in sports with friends, and frequency using facilities for sports practice. These factors should be considered in programs to encourage sports and participation in physical education.

FATORES ASSOCIADOS À APTIDÃO CARDIORRESPIRATÓRIA DE ESCOLARES

Introduccion: Existe una alta prevalencia de jovenes que no cumplen los criterios de salud para aptitud cardiorrespiratoria, que los expone a riesgos relacionados con la salud metabolica, cardiovascular y mental. De este modo, es importante investigar que aspectos estan asociados con la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria de los jovenes. Objetivo: Analizar los factores relacionados con la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria en escolares. Metodos: Estudio transversal que implica 736 escolares (50,1% mujeres) de 10 a 18 anos de edad. Fueron analizados el nivel socioeconomico, escolaridad paterna, numero de hermanos, percepcion de la actividad fisica, actividad fisica moderada a vigorosa, participacion en las clases de educacion fisica, practica deportiva, lugar para practica, transporte activo y el comportamiento sedentario. Fueron tomadas las medidas de talla, masa corporal y llevado a cabo una prueba de aptitud cardiorrespiratoria. Para estimar la razon de prevalencia (RP) y los intervalos de confianza de 95% se utilizo la regresion de Poisson. Resultados: En los escolares menores de 14 anos, las variables que se asociaron con la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria fueron el sexo femenino (RP = 0,79, 0,68 a 0,91), exceso de peso (RP = 0,73, 0,61-0,89), percepcion de actividad fisica igual a las personas de la misma edad (RP = 1,26, 1,03-1.53), actividad fisica semanal 3-6h (RP = 1,21, 1,05-1,38), participacion en las clases de educacion fisica (RP = 1,35, 1,03-1,76) y el comportamiento sedentario ≥ 2h (RP = 0,82, 0,73-0,94). Con respecto a los escolares mayores de 14 anos, el sexo femenino (RP = 0,35, 0,19-0,63), exceso de peso (RP = 0,25, 0,09-0,66), practica de deportes algunas veces (RP = 1,96, 1,00-3,81) y frecuentemente (RP = 2,09, 1,01-4,31) se asociaron con la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria. Conclusion: Los programas de intervencion con el proposito de aumentar el cumplimiento de los criterios de salud para la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria en escolares deben promover la practica de actividad fisica moderada a vigorosa, practica deportiva, participacion en las clases de educacion fisica y la reduccion del exceso de peso.

School environment, sedentary behavior and physical activity in preschool children

Abstract Objective: To analyze physical activity and sedentary behavior in preschool children during their stay at school and the associated factors. Methods: 370 preschoolers, aged 4–6 years, stratified according to gender, age and school region in the city of Londrina, PR, participated in the study. A questionnaire was applied to principals of preschools to analyze the school infrastructure and environment. Physical activity and sedentary behavior were estimated using accelerometers for five consecutive days during the childrens stay at school. The odds ratio (OR) was estimated through binary logistic regression. Results: At school, regardless of age, preschoolers spend relatively more time in sedentary behaviors (89.6–90.9%), followed by light (4.6–7.6%), moderate (1.3–3.0%) and vigorous (0.5–2.3%) physical activity. The indoor recreation room (OR 0.20, 95%CI 0.05–0.83) and the playground (OR 0.08, 95%CI 0.00–0.80) protect four-year-old schoolchildren from highly sedentary behavior. An inverse association was found between the indoor recreation room and physical activity (OR 0.20, 95%CI 0.00–0.93) in five-year-old children. The indoor recreation room (OR 1.54, 95%CI 1.35–1.77), the playground (OR 2.82, 95%CI 1.14–6.96) and the recess (OR 1.54, 95%CI 1.35–1.77) are factors that increase the chance of six-year-old schoolchildren to be active. Conclusions: The school infrastructure and environment should be seen as strategies to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior in preschool children.

Physical fitness and health-related quality of life in Brazilian adolescents: a cross-sectional study

Purpose. To compare physical fitness according to dimensions of Health-related Quality of Life (HrQOL) in Brazilian adolescents. Methods. A cross-sectional study of 588 adolescents (263 female) aged 12 to 17 years from a private school in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. HrQOL was assessed by the Kidscreen-52 questionnaire. Four components of physical fitness were assessed: adiposity (sum of tricipital and subscapular skinfolds), muscular strength (handgrip test), flexibility (sit-and-reach test), and cardiorespiratory fitness (20m Shuttle run test). Differences in physical fitness across terciles of HrQOL were assessed using Analysis of covariance. Results. Adolescents with higher scores (3 Tercile) of HrQOL in the physical well-being dimension presented higher cardiorespiratory fitness and lower skinfold thickness (p < 0.05) compared to adolescents with lower scores (1Tercile). Those with higher scores in psychological well-being and social support and peer relation dimensions also presented lower skinfold thickness (p < 0.05). Performance in handgrip strength and flexibility did not differ across terciles of HrQOL in any dimension analyzed (p > 0.05). Conclusions. Adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness seem to contribute to the physical well-being dimension of HQOL in Brazilian adolescents. Furthermore, adiposity also contributes to psychological well-being and social support and peer relations. Adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness should be monitored to avoid low HrQOL in Brazilian adolescents.
