Information Overload: A Systematic Literature Review

Peter Melinat; Tolja Kreuzkam; Dirk Stamer

Information is essential in our society and for organizations. But the flood of information affects enterprises as well as individuals also in a negative way. This problem is usually referred as Information Overload. This paper summarizes the developments of the past years and gives a prospect to future researches in this field using the method of systematic literature review. A special focus is put on the problems of enterprises with information overload and how these can be solved by using modern approaches.

The Industrial Practice of ITIL Implementation in Medium-Sized Enterprises

Philipp Schmidtbauer; Kurt Sandkuhl; Dirk Stamer

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is becoming more and more important for IT service management in the industrial and administrative sector. Service operation as one of the five ITIL core processes provides guidance for delivery and control of IT services at agreed quality levels. Main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the aspect of industrial practice of ITIL implementation in small and medium-sized enterprises. Therefor a case study of an ITIL service operation implementation is explained and analyzed.

Technical Perspective on Using Information Demand Pattern in a Collaborative Recommendation System for Improving E-Mail Communication

Dirk Stamer; Andrew Ponomarev; Nikolay Shilov; Alexander V. Smirnov

Today e-mail communication information is widely used in organizations to distribute information. The increasing volume of received e-mails hinders an efficient work. It becomes more and more difficult to identify relevant e-mails inside this enormous volume of information. This work presents a solution in a multi-user environment by improving an established e-mail client extension based on information demand pattern with a recommendation system. The contributions of this work are (1) the concept and implementation of the solution for a single-user environment using information demand pattern, (2) the concept and architecture to use the solution in a multi-user environment (3) a detailed technical description about the proposed solutions.

What Is a Framework? - A Systematic Literature Review in the Field of Information Systems

Dirk Stamer; Ole Zimmermann; Kurt Sandkuhl

The term ‘framework’ appears very often in scientific publications like journals and conferences. However, there is no universal definition of a framework. It seems that the term is not used in a consistent way by authors publishing on frameworks since they have very little in common compared to each other. The goal of this work is to analyse and show how frameworks in the fields of information systems are handled in the scientific literature over the past 10 years as well as giving a universal definition of the term ‘framework’ based on the relevant studies. The systematic literature review will serve to identify those studies and to categorize the identified frameworks. The contributions of this work are (1) a general overview about frameworks in the past 10 years, (2) a proposed categorization of frameworks and (3) a general definition of the term ‘framework’.

Information Demand Pattern for Teams

Dirk Stamer; Kurt Sandkuhl; Veronika Zeiner

Modern organizations face the challenge of having to manage an increasing amount of information. The resulting information overload leads more and more to problems in decision making with potentially negative economic consequences. Decision-makers and knowledge intensive workers are especially affected. To address this problem, information demand patterns were proposed which capture organizational knowledge about the information demand of single roles. This work extends the concept of information demand patterns from single roles to teams. Using the knowledge intensive field of project management, the paper shows how to apply the concept of information demand patterns for a whole team. The contributions of this work are (1) the methodical approach to develop information demand patterns for teams, (2) an actual information demand pattern for a steering committee in the context of project management, (3) reflections on the differences between role patterns and team patterns.

International ERP Teaching Case: Design and Experiences

Jānis Grabis; Kurt Sandkuhl; Dirk Stamer

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are among the most widely used large-scale information systems. Industry and students in IT-related subjects expect that ERP training is part of the studies during university education. However, traditional teaching materials use somewhat simplified multi-role and cross-organizational processes which do not fully reflect reality in enterprises, for example with respect to role-based permissions or coordination challenges in international organizations. This paper reports on an attempt to extend the SAP ERP GBI case study towards an international dimension. For this purpose an international ERP case study was developed which is presented in the paper with its didactical approach, the technical way how to implement the case study in SAP, and the teaching environment. The work is a joint effort by University of Rostock and Riga Technical University which has a focus on enhancing introductory ERP training for study programs in information technology and business informatics. One of the key features of the international ERP case study is that students of both universities work collaboratively on running business processes in the SAP ERP system. Evaluations suggest that the students appreciate the case study as suitable means to get an insight in real-life challenges connected to ERP use in an international context.
