Capability-Driven Development

Hasan Koç; Jan-Christian Kuhr; Kurt Sandkuhl; Felix Timm

Technological advances, changes in regulations and increasing globalization of the economy demand high adaptability from enterprises in many areas. Enterprise Architecture Management provides organizations with an integrated view enabling such adaptability. In this respect, development and management of the capabilities receive attention, as the term is associated with flexibility, dynamics and variation. On the contrary, little effort has been put towards developing and modeling capabilities. This chapter focuses on the Capability-Driven Development (CDD) method, which is a novel approach for designing capabilities to tackle the challenges of rapidly changing enterprise environments by modeling the application context. The results presented in this chapter are (i) a description of the state of research in capability development methods, (ii) a component-wise structured capability modeling method based on business processes, goals and concepts of an enterprise, (iii) a demonstration of the method application in a use case from the utilities industry and (iv) observations made during the capability development and strategy use.

An Application Design for Reference Enterprise Architecture Models.

Felix Timm

An increasing number of regulations forces financial institutes to implement a holistic and efficient regulatory compliance management (RCM). Since most institutes primarily implement isolated solutions in a deadline-triggered manner, reference enterprise architectures (R-EA) help them to save costs and increase the quality of their RCM approaches, because they reveal implications regulation has on their business, information and IT architecture. The application of such a R-EA to a specific institute is a context-dependent task and requires an intensive knowledge transfer between R-EA constructor and its user. However, the majority of research activities focuses on R-EA construction, while contributions regarding its application are scarce. Thus, this works presents an application design of a R-EA in the context of RCM, which systematically documents in what context the R-EA can be applied and what benefits it offers to its user. Using design science research (DSR), we contribute to research and practice suggesting a framework for R-EA application and apply it in the RCM context.

Application of Inductive Reference Modeling Approaches to Enterprise Architecture Models

Felix Timm; Katharina Klohs; Kurt Sandkuhl

Enterprise architectures (EA) help organizations to analyze interrelations among their strategy, business processes, application landscape and information structures. Such ambitious endeavors can be supported by using reference models for EA. In recent years, research has increasingly been investigating inductive methods for reference model development. However, the characteristics of EA models have not been considered in this context yet. We therefore aim to adapt existing inductive approaches to the domain of reference enterprise architectures development. Using design science research our work contributes to the reference modeling community with (i) a comparative analysis of inductive reference modeling methods regarding their applicability to EA models, (ii) the refinement of an identified approach to reference EA design and (iii) its application in a use case.

Current State of Governance Roles in Enterprise Architecture Management Frameworks

Matthias Wißotzki; Felix Timm; Paul Stelzer

Only if the right people equipped with the necessary competencies fulfill the tasks correctly that should be done in their designated roles, the full concept of Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) can be deployed. This topic has been discussed quite rarely in the past. Therefore, this work systematically analyzes manifold EAM literature sources like technical literatures and research papers as well as EA frameworks in order to derive a set of roles in EAM. The results were validated by dint of an expert interview with an EAM practitioner. This paper contributes to the EAM discipline by presenting a generalized overview of EAM roles and relates them to certain EAM tasks and required competencies. Finally, the proposed overview is validated by an expert interview.

A Survey on Enterprise Architecture Management in Small and Medium Enterprises

Matthias Wißotzki; Felix Timm; Anna Sonnenberger

Companies need to control enterprise-wide processes and adopt matching actions. In the past, IT focused architectures failed to integrate other layers and functions of the enterprise. The connection between just business-focused and IT-focused managing has to be established in consideration to the dynamic environment, forcing for adaption and internal changing of enterprises. This paper defines important terms for understanding of Enterprise Architectures (EA) and its Management (EAM), its importance as well as its adaptability for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). An empirical survey underlines the adaptability by researching the implementation of EAM in SME in practice. The survey shows that IT focus asserted by the literature sources is not realized in practice.

Investigation of IT Sourcing, Relationship Management and Contractual Governance Approaches

Matthias Wißotzki; Felix Timm; Jörn Wiebring; Hasan Koç

The field of IT sourcing and its related management disciplines like supplier and contract management increasingly gains attention from research around the world regarding to the development of research activity. Influence factors as well as vital competences in relation to the IT sourcing success are investigated. This analysis intends to give a transparent and comprehensive overview about recent research topics like relationship management, reveals limitations and analyses new research phenomena like multisourcing.
