Distribution of benthic flora in the lower course of the Valdivia river, Chile

The Valdivia River (Lake Region, Chile) originates in Riñihue Lake and flows into the sea at Corral Bay (39°52′S latitude), changing names several times along its course. The aquatic benthic flora (algae and aquatic plants) of the Valdivia River was characterized, based on 22 sites sampled and 124 plant species collected. Four benthic vegetation zones were established using presence-absence data: a freshwater zone and a marine zone were found at the extremes of the transect; an estuarine zone and a discontinuity zone were detected in the middle of this transect. The freshwater zone was characterized by a relatively diverse assemblage of vascular plants, the marine zone was dominated by algae and was rich in species. By contrast the estuarine zone was inhabited by only a few species but in great abundance, while the discontinuity zone was poor, in species and low in cover vegetation.ResumenEl río Valdivia (X Región, Chile) nace en el lago Riñihue y desemboca al mar en la Bahía de Corral (39°52′L S), cambiando varias veces de nombre a lo largo de su curso. Se estudió la flora acuática bentónica (algas y plantas acuáticas) de este río, en 22 lugares de muestreo, colectándose 124 especies. Utilizando datos de presencia/ ausencia e establecieron 4 zonas de vegetación bentónica: una zona límnica y otra marina, en ambos extremos del transecto, y en el medio de él, una zona estuarina y otra de discontinuidad. La zona de agua dulce se caracterizó por poseer una mayor diversidad de especies de plantas vasculares, en la zona marina dominaban las algas. Por el contrario, la zona estuarina presentó pocas especies pero abundantes, mientras que la zona de discontinuidad presentó muy pocas especies y con baja cobertura.

La diversidad florística del humedal "Ciénagas del Name" (Región del Maule) comparada con otros humedales costeros de Chile

Se estudia la flora del humedal de las Cienagas del Name (Cauquenes, Region del Maule, Chile), sobre la base de su composicion sistematica, origen y espectro biologico. Se registraron 138 especies, con predominancia de nativas. Taxonomicamente la flora esta integrada por 5 clases, 55 familias y 121 generos, representando la mayor diversidad floristica registrada para los humedales costeros de la zona central de Chile. Fanerofitos, hemicriptofitos y terofitos se encontraron en proporciones equivalentes, lo que se corresponde con el clima Mediterraneo del area. Los macrofitos representan solo un 14,49% de la flora total y entre ellos dominan la planta sumergida Ceratophyllum chilense y la emergida Schoenoplectus californicus. La comparacion floristica con otros humedales costeros permite confirmar su caracter dulceacuicola, mas escaso en los humedales costeros de Chile central. El analisis de la flora confirma la necesidad de tomar medidas de conservacion para resguardar este importante y especial ecosistema acuatico y zonas aledanas.

DINÁMICAS SUCESIONAL PRIMARIA NATURAL Y SECUNDARIA ANTROPOGÉNICA DE LA VEGETACIÓN DEL HUMEDAL "CIÉNAGAS DEL NAME" (CHILE CENTRAL): UN MODELO CONCEPTUAL

The dynamics of wetland vegetation in “Laguna del Name”, Cauquenes province, Maule Region, Chile was studied, including aquatic and swamp vegetation as well as surrounding terrestrial areas. By applying the Bray-Curtis similarity index, the first cluster put together the swamp communities, while the second cluster corresponded to terrestrial and aquatic communities; this ordination analysis was used to make equal the first two axes to temperature and moisture gradients. The plant geographical origin of the species allowed distinguishing primary native communities with few introduced species, as well as secondary and tertiary anthropogenic communities with several introduced species. A conceptual model of the potential vegetation dynamics was developed, identifying a natural succession (filling of the lagoon) and an anthropogenic succession, which corresponds to the degradation of the primitive sclerophyllous forest through logging, grazing, farming and ruderalization; this allowed determining the course followed in both cases. The aquatic succession may correspond to a natural hydrosere that would cause the filling of the lagoon, starting with submerged aquatic species, followed by floating leaf communities and leading to a reed bed that may end up in a native swamp forest. Today, this aquatic series stops at the reed-bed stage with Schoenoplectus californicus, which in turn can be replaced by anthropogenic wet meadow/pasture communities. The succession of land degradation transforms sclerophyllous native forest into a grazing “espinal” with Acacia caven, which can permanently invade the wet meadows, connecting both series.

Una nueva especie del género Bipinnula (Orchidaceae) para Chile

Se describe e ilustra una nueva especie, Bipinnula gabriel (Orchidaceae). Esta nueva especie habita en el tipo de bosque esclerofilo costero de Chile Central, en la localidad de Putu, Constitucion, Region del Maule. Discutimos su identidad frente a dos taxones afines (Bipinnula plumosa var. plumosa y Bipinnula plumosa var. philipporum) y las diferenciamos en terminos de sus nichos ecologicos. Los resultados senalaron que esta nueva especie posee notables diferencias morfologicas con las especies mas proximas, ademas de diferencias ecologicas que apoyan a esta especie como nueva. Entregamos una descripcion de la nueva especie y su habitat junto a propuestas para su estado de conservacion y claves para una determinacion adecuada.
