Problematic students: Gatekeeping practices of academic professional psychology programs

Tammi Vacha-Haase; Donna S. Davenport; Shoshana D. Kerewsky

When the topic of problematic students arises, there are often more questions than answers. Professional psychology programs may serve as gatekeepers for the profession, yet there is little guidance on intervening with problematic students. This study surveyed training directors (TDs) of American Psychological Association-accredited academic psychology programs regarding problematic student behaviors. Over half of the programs that responded had terminated at least 1 student during a 3-year period, with TDs citing inadequate clinical skills as the major reason. Despite accreditation policies, 54% of the programs did not have written guidelines for intervening with problematic students. Recommendations to promote consistent evaluation and intervention at the faculty, student, program, and national-policy level are discussed.

Ethical Issues in the Teaching of Group Counseling

Donna S. Davenport

The practice of having professors or supervised doctoral students leading laboratory groups for students in masters-level group counseling courses is widespread. There are, however, a number of ethical considerations which render this practice problematic, as well as alternative solutions with fewer potential ethical conflicts.

Person-centered therapy and solution-focused brief therapy: An integration of present and future awareness.

Lisa M. Cepeda; Donna S. Davenport

The authors propose an integration of person-centered therapy, with its focus on the here and now of client awareness of self, and solution-focused therapy, with its future-oriented techniques that also raise awareness of client potentials. Although the two theories hold different assumptions regarding the therapists role in facilitating client change, it is suggested that solution-focused techniques are often compatible for use within a person-centered approach. Further, solution-focused activities may facilitate the journey of becoming self-aware within the person-centered tradition. This article reviews the two theories, clarifying the similarities and differences. To illustrate the potential integration of the approaches, several types of solution-focused strategies are offered through a clinical example. A confirmatory factor analysis of the hendrick‐hendrick love attitudes scale: We may not yet have an acceptable model

Andrea Rotzien; Tammi Vacha-Haase; Kavita Murthy; Donna S. Davenport; Bruce Thompson

Loving is a fundamental aspect of being human. Freud himself argued that the inability to love leads to illness, and some empirical research appears to support his view. Yet our knowledge of the nature of love remains primitive, because until recently it was not considered scientifically respectable to investigate love phenomena. This study used confirmatory factor analytic methods to test the fit of various models to data provided by 499 subjects on the 1990 version of the Hendrick and Hendrick Love Attitudes Scale. The results suggest that counselors and researchers should not treat the love styles delineated by Lee as discrete or uncorrelated entities. The results also suggest that the traditional model regarding this measure, positing (a) six factors (b) that are uncorrelated, may not provide a very good fit to data from the Love Attitudes Scale.
