JPEG quantization table design for photos with face in wireless handset

Gu-Min Jeong; Jun-Ho Kang; Yong-Su Mun; Doo-Hee Jung

In this paper, a design technique of JPEG quantization table is proposed for photos with face whose size is 128 × 128 in wireless handset. The small size images may have different characteristics from the large images used in PC. Also, the photos with face have their own characteristics. From these two facts, new quantization table design is proposed in this paper. The quantization tables are derived from R-D optimization for the photos with face and it is shown that the proposed quantization tables have good performances for size and quality. In R-D optimization, the obtained quantization table is image-specific and cannot be applied to other images. In the proposed method, the quantization tables are obtained from various photo samples and final table is gotten as average of them. This makes the final quantization tables applied to other photos with face. Also, it is possible to control the quality factor based on the interpolation of high quality quantization table and middle quality quantization table. Simulation results show that the obtained quantization table makes the compressed file size small and the image quality improved in general cases.

Remote diagnostic protocol and system for U-car

Doo-Hee Jung; Gu-Min Jeong; Hyun-Sik Ahn; Minsoo Ryu; Masayoshi Tomizuka

This paper proposes a remote diagnostic protocol and system for U-Car, which has same functionality of conventional scanners, automobile diagnostic instruments. It consists of a remote server, mobile handsets with an application and a connecting device. The remote server has vehicle diagnostic database. The application program on mobile handsets relays diagnostic signals and controls the flow of data packets based on the dedicated protocol. The connecting device is used for converting the signal level and protocols between automobiles and handsets. Since the remote server diagnoses vehicle directly, diagnostic history can be accumulated automatically. Therefore, value added services such as connecting service-shop directly based on diagnostic results are possible. New automobile systems can be easily dealt only by changing diagnostic database of the remote server. Although the proposed system is constructed based on mobile handsets, it can be easily extended to car-PCs and other systems for U-car.

Vector graphics application using self-networking and replaceable structure in wireless handset

Gu-Min Jeong; Seung-Won Na; Doo-Hee Jung; Hyun-Sik Ahn; Minsoo Ryu

In this paper, self-networking and replaceable structure in vector graphics contents are presented for wireless internet service. The wireless networks over 2G or 3G are limited in the sense of the speed and the cost. Considering these characteristics of wireless network, self-networking method and replaceable structure in downloaded contents are introduced in order to save the amount of data and provide variations for contents. During the display of contents, a certain data for the contents is downloaded from the server and it is managed appropriately for the operation of the contents. The downloaded materials are reflected to the original contents using replaceable structure. Also, the downloading and modification are independent of the play. In this implementation, the data consists of control data for control and resource data for image, sound or text. Comparing to the conventional methods which download the whole data, the amount of the transmitted data is very small since only the difference is downloaded. Also, during the play of the contents, the changes are adopted immediately. The throughput analysis of the proposed structure is given based on the markov process. The whole functions are implemented in wireless handset and the various applications are discussed.

Full Duplex Relaying with Buffer Based on Cognitive Radio Technique

Junsu Kim; Doo-Hee Jung; Jeho Lee; Su Min Kim

In this paper, we propose a cognitive radio based power control scheme for full duplex relaying (FDR) system with buffer. The proposed scheme maximizes the system throughput by adaptively controlling the transmit power of relay by using underlay cognitive radio (CR) technique. We verify the performance of the proposed system with intensive simulations.

A study on the compensation of image rotation for optical three-dimensional microscope

Yeon-Beom Choi; Jun-Ho Kim; Woo-Jun Kim; Doo-Hee Jung

In this paper, we propose a method to correct the pechan prism table for optical three-dimensional microscope. To minimize an error in rotation angle of image for corresponding polar angle when using the calculated pechan prism table, we processed the image of reference sample to calculate the rotation angle, then create a new table. Experimental works show the validity and practicality of the proposed method.

Development of Measurement System for 3D Microscope

Yeon-Beom Choi; Kee-Jun Nam; Woo-Jun Kim; Doo-Hee Jung

In this paper, we propose a measurement system for three-dimensional microscope which is designed to move the objective lens in two directions polar and azimuth angle. By only two measurements of adjusting polar angle with the controller and measuring the length of the object through camera, we can get three-dimensional information of the object like height, step and angle. Servo-controllers, PC interface, image acquisition software and image processing software have been developed for this system and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

A multimedia service implementation using MJPEG and QCELP in wireless handset

Gu-Min Jeong; Seung-Won Na; Doo-Hee Jung; Jun-Ho Kang; Gu-Pil Jeong

In this paper, a fast implementation of JPEG is discussed and its application to multimedia service is presented for mobile wireless internet. A fast JPEG player is developed based on several fast algorithms for wireless handset. In the color transformation, RCT is adopted instead of ICT for JPEG source. For the most time-consuming DCT part, the binDCT can reduce the decoding time. In upsampling and RGB conversion, the transformation from YCbCr to RGB 16 bit is made at one time. In some parts, assembly language is applied for high-speed. Also, an implementation of multimedia in wireless handset is described using MJPEG (Motion JPEG) and QCELP(Qualcomm Code Excited Linear Prediction Coding). MJPEG and QCELP are used for video and sound, which are synchronized in handset. For the play of MJPEG, the decoder is implemented as a SW upon the MSM 5500 baseband chip using the fast JPEG decoder. For the play of QCELP, the embedded QCELP player in handset is used. The implemented multimedia player has a fast speed preserving the image quality.
