Impact of climate change on agricultural production of Odisha (India): a Ricardian analysis

Diptimayee Mishra; Naresh Chandra Sahu; Dukhabandhu Sahoo

The present study examines the climate sensitivity of the agricultural production of Odisha, a state at the east coast of India. The two climatic variables which have been taken for the study are temperature and rainfall. The study has adopted the Ricardian approach to assess the impact of climate change on the net revenue from agricultural production of Odisha. Panel regression model has been used to test the relationship between climate and other control variables on net revenue. Results of the study reveal that climate has significant influence on the agricultural production of Odisha. The possible future climate scenarios are found to have negative impact on the net revenue from agricultural production of Odisha towards the end of twenty-first century, which call for some policy attentions.

Efficiency of the Information and Technology Sector of India and Its Relevance to Indian Economic Growth

Dukhabandhu Sahoo

This article investigates the contribution of the service sector, especially the information and communication services to Indian Economic growth using a growth accounting analysis and data from the CMIE database. The results suggest that the mean Pure Technical Efficiency (PTE) score was about 0.6, indicating thereby that companies are 40 per cent pure technical inefficient. Pure technical inefficiency in the Indian software industry may be attributed to the poor infrastructure, mainly power supply. Infrastructure bottlenecks and frequent power cut lead to delays and productivity loss in the silicon city of India, that is, Bengaluru. Percentage of efficient companies in terms of PTE scores was lowest in the year 2003–04 (20.83 per cent) and highest in the year 2005–06 (40.28 per cent). Percentage of efficient companies in PTE score followed a cyclical pattern as well. Indian software companies are becoming more scale inefficient over the years. It was observed that the private Indian (PI) companies have relatively high Overall Technical Efficiency (OTE) score as compared to private foreign (PF) and group-owned companies, which may be due to external environmental factors that have a bearing on OTE of the companies. Nidhi Yadav; Naresh Chandra Sahu; Dukhabandhu Sahoo; Devendra K. Yadav

The purpose of this paper is to explore the barriers to sustainable tourism management (STM) implementation in a protected area (PA) of a developing country, India, by taking a case study of National Chambal Sanctuary (NCS).,This study develops a framework to analyse the interaction among a set of barriers of STM using the interpretive structural modelling approach.,In this study, 16 relevant barriers responsible for the failure of STM in Indian scenario have been selected. The lack of coordination among various stakeholders and the lack of government incentives are found as the most significant barriers among the selected barriers of STM implementation in the sanctuary.,This study provides most influencing barriers and how these barriers hinder the sustainability efforts in NCS. The study’s main limitation is its generalisation. The problems in implementing sustainable practices may differ with the region.,This study provides strong practical inferences to both practitioners as well as academicians. The practitioners are suggested to focus on identified barriers and formulating strategies to achieve sustainability in the tourism sector. Academicians may propose the solutions and necessary interventions for identified barriers.,Identification and presentation of barriers to STM implementation in the context of a PA are rare to find in literature.

Perception of community on CSR initiatives of MCL, Odisha, India

Sushanta Kumar Panda; Dukhabandhu Sahoo

When industries incorporate social, economic, environmental and ethical dimensions in their business policy and practices and take care of the needs and expectations of their stakeholders, it is called corporate social responsibility (CSR). As local community is one of the primary stakeholders of the industry, the CSR policy and practices of the industry have to give them top priority. In the present empirical study, the perception of the local community on CSR, who resides near the vicinity of the coal mines of Odisha, has been taken into account and critically examined the CSR activities of Mahanadi Coal Field Ltd. (MCL). Majority of the community are not satisfied with the CSR activities of MCL. Particularly the community, who resides near the closed coal mine, is not getting the benefits of the CSR activities.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and challenges of Globalisation in India.

SushantaKumar Panda; NareshChandra Sahu; Dukhabandhu Sahoo

Sushanta Kumar Panda. The flow of information has enormously increased due to globalisation, which in turn have empowered the stakeholders and enhanced people’s expectation from the corporate houses. Hence Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become more relevant today than ever before. On the other hand due to adverse impact of globalisation, society and environment have to pay a heavy price. Therefore, the corporate houses should realise their responsibility to address the social, environmental and political challenges of globalisation (Wood et al, 2006). Pluralistic society, multiparty-democratic polity and liberalised economy of India have been highly influenced by globalisation. Problems of pollution, carbon emission, energy crisis, inequality, displacement, conspicuous consumption, urbanisation and unemployment have been magnified due to globalisation in India. To meet the expectations of people and to face the challenges of globalisation government and corporate sector have to implement CSR policy in a more complimentary and mutually reinforcing manner (Utting, 2005). The dynamics of social change, influenced by globalisation has compelled the Multinational Corporations (MNCs) and government of India to incorporate CSR in their business strategy and legal framework. The real challenge is how to attain global competitiveness and economic growth without compromising the ecological balance. The way out is to achieve sustainable development through CSR. The major fields in which CSR can play a crucial role to address the challenges of globalisation in India are social, environmental, global governance and economic sectors.
