Effects of different sport surfaces on muscle performance

Dursun Katkat; Y Bulut; M Demir; S Akar

The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of different sport surfaces on athletic performance by means of muscle performance. Twenty two elite male basketball players, aged between 17 and 28, participated in this study. This study was executed on 7 different sport surfaces: asphalt, synthetic grass, natural grass, tile powder, soil, wooden parquet and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). Leg strength (LS) and vertical jumping height (VJH) were measured at rest and after a given training protocol on each surface. Surface compliance was evaluated with a drop test using a medicine ball. Asphalt and synthetic grass were the most fatiguing, natural grass, soil and tile powder were moderately fatiguing, parquet and EPDM were the least fatiguing surfaces. The results of surface compliance were inconsistent with those obtained in LS and VJH tests. As the compliance of the surface increased LS and VJH increased, i.e. performance was decreased. The results of the present study suggest that it is better to use parquet and EPDM in construction of indoor sport surfaces. On the other hand, it may be appropriate to build outdoor surfaces with natural grass because of its aesthetic and visual impacts and its contribution to the amount of

Level of Anxiety and Burnout among Martial Athletes into 17 th Mediterranean Games

Dursun Katkat

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the level of anxiety and burnout among martial athletes participating in the 17th Mediterranean Games. During the study, 336 athletes (142 females, 194 males) were administered with the Spielberg State Anxiety Inventory (SSAI) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) in order to collect data regarding their levels of anxiety and burnout. The study data was statistically analyzed using frequency analysis, the independent group t-test, the Pearson correlation test and the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The study results demonstrated a positive and significant relationship between the level of burnout and anxiety of the athletes (r=-0.764, p<0.05).

In this study, anxiety states of candidates who were going to attend special talent examination in the School of Physical Education and Sports were analyzed in terms of various variables such as age, gender, residence and socio-economic level of the family, parents’ educational levels and professions, active sports status, the number of exams taken, and applied training methods. Within the scope of this study, 244 candidates who applied for the special talent examination held by the School of Physical Education and Sports in Gumushane University in 2014-2015 academic year volunteered to participate. Regarding the data collection tool, a personal information form and State-Trait Anxiety Scale developed by Spielberger et. al were used. For the analysis of gathered data, for paramedic variables, t test and test of One Way Anova were applied. For non paramedic variables, Kruskal Wallis test was applied. In order to determine the source of difference between the means Post Hoc Tukey test was applied. All the analyses during the research process were carried out by SPSS 20.00 package program. As a result, it was found out that the only significant difference between the anxiety scores and the stated variables was in terms of candidates’ mothers’ occupation variable (F239= 2,507, p<.05) whereas no other significant difference was determined concerning other variables.
