Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Satureja hortensis L. essential oil

Essential oil of Satureja hortensis L. was analyzed by GC and GC/MS and tested by a broth micro-well dilution method for activity against multiresistant clinical isolates of pathogenic bacteria from 10 different genera: Klebsiella, Escherichia, Proteus, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus, Enterobacter, Citrobacter and Acinetobacter. The main compounds in the oil were carvacrol (67%), γ-terpinene (15.3%) and p-cymene (6.73%). The oil showed activity against all tested strains. MIC/MBC values were in the range of 0.78-25 μl/ml, with the exception of the strain P. aeruginosa. Microbicidal concentration for this particular strain (50 μl/ml) was the highest tested concentration. The oil showed inhibitory and bactericidal effect at the same concentration (MIC=MBC) for all but three strains.

Comparison of the Hypotensive and Bradycardic Activity of Ginkgo, Garlic, and Onion Extracts

The acute effect of ethanol extracts ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.), and onion (Allium cepa L.) on arterial blood pressure (BP), and heart rate (HR) in anesthetized normotensive rats was examined and compared. Arterial BP was registered in the left carotid artery. The data showed that intravenous administration of the extracts produced dose-dependent and reversible hypotensive and bradycardic effects. The most effective in reducing arterial BP and HR is extract of garlic. There were statistically significant differences in bradycardic and hypotensive effects of the garlic and ginkgo extracts.

Antimicrobial Activity of Satureja Hortensis L. Essential Oil Against Pathogenic Microbial Strains

ABSTRACT A hydrodistilled oil of Satureja hortensis L. was investigated for its antimicrobial activity against a panel of 11 bacterial and three fungal strains. The antimicrobial activity was determined using disk-diffusion method and broth microdilution method. Essential oil of S. hortensis L. showed significant activity against wide spectrum of Gram (-) bacteria (MIC/MBC=0.025–0.78/0.05–0.78 μl/ml) and Gram (+) bacteria (MIC/MBC=0.05–0.39/0.05–0.78 μl/ml), as well as against fungal strains (MIC/MBC=0.20/0.78 μl/ml). Therefore, the present results indicate that this oil can be used in food conservation, treatment of different deseases of humans, and also for the treatment of the plants infected by phytopathogens.

Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oil of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi ssp. glandulosa (Req.) P.W. Ball from Montenegro

Abstract An oil of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi ssp. glandulosa (Req.) P. W. Ball obtained by hydrodistillation was analyzed by GC and GC/MS and 36 constituents were identified (98.4%). The main constituents in the oil were pulegone (37.5%), menthone (17,6%), piperitenone (15.0%) and piperitone (10.2%). The antimicrobial activity of the oil was screened against Aspergillus niger, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The microorganisms were found to be susceptible to the oil

Chemical Composition and Microbial Activity of the Essential Oil of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi ssp. nepeta var. subisodonda (Borb.) Hayek from Serbia

Abstract An oil of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi ssp. nepeta var. subisodonda (Borb.) Hayek obtained by hydrodistillation was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Eleven constituents were identified (96.5%). The main constituents in the oil were pulegone (75.5%), piperitenone oxide (6.0%), menthone (5.3%) and menthol (4.3%). The microbial activity of the oil was screened against Aspergillus niger, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was found that all mentioned microorganisms were sensitive to the oil.

Chemical profile and antioxidative and antimicrobial activity of juices and extracts of 4 black currants varieties (Ribes nigrum L.).

UNLABELLED The aim of this article was to determine the chemical composition (anthocyanin and ascorbic acid contents, total phenols, and tannins), and the antioxidative, and antimicrobial activities of the juices and methanol extracts of 4 varieties-Tenah, Triton, Ben Sarek, and Ometa. The juices were made during 2008, 2009, and 2010 from the berries grown on the same location. Statistically significant differences were found in all the tested parameters of each variety for every year. Ometa variety exhibited the best antioxidative activity. The highest ascorbic acid value had Tenah juice from 2010 (211 mg/100 g) and Ben Sarek methanol extract (656 mg/100 g). Delphinidin-3-ruthenoside was the dominant anthocyanin in Triton, Tenah, and Ben Sarek variety during all 3 y and Ometa in 2010 where Ometa in 2008 and 2009 had slightly higher content of cyanidin-3-ruthenoside. The minimum inhibitory and microbicidal concentrations ranged from MIC/MBC(MFC) = 62.5 to 500 mg/mL for juices and 0.4 to 500 mg/mL for extracts. There was no significant difference in the effect of the juices against Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacteria. All the extracts acted in lower concentrations than juices. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Data contained in this article provide an insight into the effects the weather condition has on the content of the bioactive compounds in genetically different types of black currants, during the 3-y observation period. This article is relevant to the commercial application of black currants-based dietary supplements.

Comparative Study of Spasmolytic Properties, Antioxidant Activity and Phenolic Content of Arbutus unedo from Montenegro and Greece

Arbutus unedo leaf is used traditionally for gastrointestinal complaints. Ethanol extracts from Arbutus unedo collected in both Montenegro (AuM) and Greece (AuG) were found to decrease the ileal basal tonus, with AuG producing a significantly higher (p < 0.05) reduction in contractile response to acetylcholine. AuM and AuG relaxed 80 mm K+ induced contractions and shifted the Ca++ concentration–response curves to the right, similar to that caused by verapamil, suggesting that the spasmolytic effect was induced through calcium channel inhibition. The antioxidant activity of AuM and AuG and the phenolic content of the extracts and dry plant material were studied, and both extracts were found to possess considerable antioxidant properties. AuG showed a stronger in vitro antioxidative activity in the DPPH assay and in the TBA test. Polyphenol, tannin and flavonoid levels were higher in AuG, supporting the more potent spasmolytic and antioxidative effects, whereas the arbutin content was higher in dry plant material collected in Montenegro. Relaxant Effect of the Ethanol Extract of Helichrysum plicatum (Asteraceae) on Isolated Rat Ileum Contractions

Helichrysum plicatum (Turkish Helichrysum) has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of gastric and hepatic disorders. The aim of the present study was to examine the relaxant activity of an extract of H. plicatum flowers on isolated rat ileum. Segments of ileum of rats were suspended in an organ bath. Cumulative concentrations of H. plicatum ethanol extract induced a relaxant effect on spontaneous rat ileum contractions. H. plicatum extract caused a mean contractile response of 81.68 ± 6.17% (at a dose of 0.01 mg/mL) and 30.08 ± 9.07% (at a dose of 1 mg/mL). A similar effect was observed with papaverine (0.01–3 μg/mL). H. plicatum extract (0.01–1 mg/mL) relaxed high K+ (80 mM) precontractions, an effect similar to that caused by papaverine (0.01–3 μg/mL). The plant extract (0.03–0.3 mg/mL) also induced a significant depression of the cumulative concentration response curve for acetylcholine (5–1500 nM) (p < 0.01). Atropine (140 nM) abolished the acetylcholine effect. The extract (0.03–0.3 mg/mL) reduced the histamine (1–300 nM) and BaCl2 (3–900 μM) induced contractions (p < 0.01). Our results showed the relaxant effect of the ethanol extract of Helichrysum plicatum flowers on the isolated rat intestine Extract of H. plicatum can inhibit the spontaneous ileum contractions and contractions induced by acetylcholine, histamine, barium and potassium ions.

Chemical composition, antimicrobial, antioxidative and anticholinesterase activity of Satureja Montana L. ssp montana essential oil

The present study investigates the chemical compositions of three Satureja montana L. ssp montana essential oils and correlates chemical variability with biological activities. GC/MS analysis showed that with an increase in altitude (100–500–800 m), a higher content of linalool, terpinen-4-ol and cis-sabinene hydrate was found, while the percentage of phenolic compounds, thymol and carvacrol decreased. Antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was tested against 7 fungal and 23 bacterial strains. The essential oil characterized by the highest content of phenols and alcohols exhibited the highest antimicrobial potential. The correlation analysis showed that the major carriers of the obtained antioxidant activity are oxygenated monoterpenes. All essential oils inhibited human serum cholinesterase activity. High antimicrobial potential, together with moderate antioxidant capacity and strong inhibition of human serum cholinesterase, classifies S. montana essential oil as a natural source of compounds that can be used in the treatment of foodborne and neurological diseases, wound and other infections, as well as for general health improvement.

Composition of the Essential Oil of Calamintha vardarensis (Greuter et Burdet) Silic

Abstract The essential oil of Calamintha vardarensis (Lamiaceae) obtained after water distillation was subjected to GC and GC/MS analysis and 30 constituents were identified (98.9%). The main constituents in the oil were menthone (48.3%), pulegone (34.8%) and cis-piperitone oxide (7.4%).
