The 209Pb single-neutron states and the l = 4 levels of 205Pb studied by the (d, p) reaction

Abstract Differential cross sections and vector and tensor analyzing powers have been measured for the ( d ,p) reaction to the single-particle states of 209Pb with spins ranging from 1 2 to 15 2 . Distorted-wave calculations are compared to all of these results and reasonable agreement is obtained with the cross sections and vector analyzing powers but not the tensor analyzing powers. The d and g vector analyzing powers for the spin-orbit partners are found to have opposite signs and this fact is used to assign g 9 2 spin to three l = 4 states seen near 2.6 MeV in 2205Pb.

Population of resonant /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C states via the reaction /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,. cap alpha. )/sup 24/Mg

Excitation functions for the reaction /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O, ..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Mg have been measured from E/sub lab/(/sup 16/O) = 62 to 110 MeV using a counter telescope at theta/sub lab/ = 7.5/sup 0/. Selective population of relatively few states at very high excitation energies in /sup 24/Mg(E/sub x/(/sup 24/Mg) > 20 MeV) is seen. A possible correspondence is found between these states and the narrow resonances reported in /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C reactions. In addition, a possible correspondence between averaged yields in /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O, ..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Mg and gross structure seen in serveral /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C reaction channels is cited.
