Bismuth(III) chloride-catalyzed intramolecular hetero-Diels–Alder reactions: a novel synthesis of hexahydrodibenzo[b,h][1,6]naphthyridines☆

BiCl3 efficiently catalyzed the intramolecular hetero-Diels–Alder reactions of aldimines generated in situ from aromatic amines and the N-allyl derivative of o-aminobenzaldehyde in refluxing acetonitrile to afford a novel class of hexahydrodibenzo[b,h][1,6]naphthyridine derivatives. The products are isolated as mixtures of trans and cis diastereoisomers in a 1:1 ratio, in good to excellent yields.

A new, efficient and stereoselective synthesis of furo[2′,3′:5,6]pyrano[4,3-b]quinoline derivatives 3 and 3′ has been achieved by intramolecular hetero–Diels–Alder reactions of aldimines generated in situ from aromatic amines and the O-allyl derivative of the chiral sugar derived aldehyde 2 in acetonitrile in the presence of a catalytic amount of BiCl3. The products are formed with extremely high trans selectivity in good to excellent yields.

Abstract Intramolecular [4+2] cycloaddition reactions of N-aryl imines generated in situ from anilines and the S-allyl derivatives of pyrazole aldehydes have been carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of BiCl3 to provide the corresponding hexahydropyrazolo [4′,3′:5,6]thiopyrano[4,3-b]quinolines in excellent yields. The reactions are highly diastereoselective and the only cis products are isolated exclusively. #IICT Communication No: 020602
