author had a rare opportunity to study and photograph the hymns to Isis inscribed on the walls of the temple built by Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the third century B.C. In this book, he provides photographs and hand-copies of the eight most important hymns, their transliteration and translation with extensive documentation, their relationship to both earlier and later references to Isis in Egyptian texts, as well as to Greek and Latin Isiac aretalogies. Unique in Egyptian religious literature, the hymns are important both for their literary merit and for their theological and ritual significance. The high artistic quality of individual relief figures should be of special interest to historians of Ptolemaic art. 203 pages. 23 plates. 9 figures.
