El olivar regado en la provincia de Jaén

This paper is conceived as an initial approach to the series of deep transformations undergone by the olive tree monoculture in the province of Jaen. Specifically, we have focussed on the analysis of the impact of the use of water as a massif factor, inasmuch as this has meant the appearence of a new image and characterization of this sector both in terms of ecology and farming and in terms of economy and landscape.

El ferrocarril Baeza-Utiel. Crónica de un fracaso colectivo

The railway from Baeza to Utiel, conceived like an alternative route to the radial lines that departed from Madrid, was initially outlined in the middle of XIXth Century. However, its construction was finally approved in 1926, after the most important people and the greater part of society from the provinces of Jaen and Albacete claimed for it. After the most part of railway was built, and the start-up of a stretch of it was prepared, the works were paralyzed in the early seventies and permanently abandoned in the early eighties. So, this railway, that had generated great expectations for the development of one of the poorest regions of the inland area of Spain, was closed. One more time, the Administration give priority to the economic aspects and was insensitive in front of the social and territorial situation, troubled by the poverty and extreme isolation of their inhabitants, which only had the definitive emigration like their unique possibility.

The reservoir of El Tranco, located in Guadalquivir River headwaters, was the one with the larger capacity of storage of water in Andalusia. Its contribution has been essential to support the irrigation in the extensive betic valley, besides its water make possible the generation of electrical energy that was necessary to modernize the Andalusian economic system and the improvement of standard of living in a lot of homes in Guadalquivir valley. However, these promising perspectives did not have scarcely positive socio-economic repercussions in Segura Mountain Range. The massive compulsory purchases due to the building of reservoir and the joined reforestation brought about the migration of hundreds of inhabitants, with poor conditions in a lot of times. Los municipios de Sierra Morena se encuentran entre los principales destinatarios de la politica de repoblacion forestal desarrollada durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX en Espana. En el presente articulo se muestran los planteamientos y motivaciones de estos trabajos en la provincia de Jaen, analizando sus resultados espaciales, temporales y territoriales.
