We evaluated the behavior of osmolality, anion gap, pH and measurable plasma ions of 14 Purebred Arabian horses, 9 males and 5 females, finalists in an endurance race of 90 km. In order to achieve this, we collected venous blood samples twice, at rest and after prolonged exercise, in order to measure the interest variables. The results allowed to observe that from the rest an increase with significant difference in the values of Hct, PPT and AG, suggesting loss of fluids and slight dehydration. The pH and the H+ ion almost had no changes, indicating absence of metabolic disorders. Reductions, with significant difference, were verified for the ions Cl-, HCO3-, K+, Ca++, as well as BE. These data suggest that the type of exercise to which the animals were submitted was consistent with the athletic ability and that supplementation during the competition contributed to minimize such losses.

Twenty-six five-month-old lambs originated from flocks with no previous contact with Brachiaria spp. pastures were divided into three groups. Two groups (GS and GSB) were fed daily with fresh harvested Brachiaria decumbens ad libitum. GS was kept in an area with solar exposure and GSB was kept in stalls sheltered from solar exposure. Control group (GC) was also kept under solar exposure, but fed with Cynodon dactylon grass hay and Pennisetum purpureum fresh grass. All sheep from the three groups were supplemented with 200g daily of a commercial concentrated food. Evaluation of clinical signs was carried out daily and blood samples were collected twice a week to determine AST and GGT serum activities. Three out of nine lambs of GS presented clinical signs of Brachiaria spp. poisoning, and two died. One animal showed clinical signs and died in GSB. The main clinical signs observed were apathy, weight loss, photophobia, conjunctivitis, ocular mucous discharge and jaundice. Dermatitis due to photosensitization was not observed. Mean serum AST and GGT activities were significantly higher (p<0,05) in the group exposed to sun, than in the other two groups, and the GGT activities were significantly higher in the group sheltered than in the control group (p<0,05). All animals at the end of the experiment were submitted to liver biopsy and died lambs were necropsied. Histopathological evaluation of liver samples from sheep with clinical signs evidenced swelling and vacuolization of hepatocytes, individual hepatocytes necrosis, presence of foamy macrophages, crystal negative images within bile ducts and foamy macrophages, biliary duct hyperplasia and periportal mononuclear infiltration. These results suggest that sun exposure does not define intoxication, but exacerbates the toxicity of the grass.

A cartilagem articular possui capacidade de reparacao limitada, aumentado a predisposicao ao desenvolvimento de alteracoes degenerativas, muitas vezes irreversiveis. Diversas formas de tratamento, cirurgicas ou conservativas, sao descritas, entretanto a terapeutica da osteoartrite continua sendo grande desafio ao medico veterinario. Neste contexto, a pesquisa envolvendo celulas-tronco mesenquimais destaca-se na busca de melhorias e avancos na reparacao da cartilagem articular. Objetivou-se, no presente projeto, comparar a regeneracao cartilaginosa da articulacao coxofemoral de coelhos, com e sem o transplante de celulas-tronco mesenquimais autologas, por meio de exames radiograficos e histopatologicos. Dois grupos, com 15 animais da especie leporina cada, foram submetidos a inducao quimica de osteoartrite com solucao de colagenase 2% na articulacao coxofemoral direita. No Grupo 1 (Celulas-tronco) realizou-se a aplicacao intra-articular de celulas-tronco mesenquimais autologas, enquanto que, o Grupo 2 (Controle) foi constituido por animais submetidos a aplicacao intra-articular de solucao salina esteril. Foram realizadas avaliacoes radiograficas e histopatologicas aos 30, 60 e 90 dias apos a aplicacao. Os resultados histologicos deste ensaio indicam que celulas-tronco mesenquimais (Grupo 1) melhoraram discretamente a qualidade do tecido de reparo, de acordo com os criterios da escala semi-quantitativa ICRS 1 (“International Cartilage Repair Society”). O Grupo 1 (Celulas-Tronco) demonstrou superioridade em relacao ao Grupo 2 principalmente nos parâmetros: Superficie articular, matriz extracelular e distribuicao celular.
