Reconciling contradictory paths: identity play and work in a career transition

Fernando F. Fachin; Eduardo Paes Barreto Davel

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the interconnection of identity play and identity work during transitions. Design/methodology/approach – The authors have conducted a 46-year longitudinal and process-based study on film director Denys Arcand. The focus is on his contested career shift from being a political documentary filmmaker to a box-office success and maker of television commercials. Films and media interviews were largely and systematically analyzed. Findings – In order to explain how to maintain a sense of authenticity in transitioning between contradictory paths, the authors highlight how identity play and identity work appear in self-fuelling interaction through four processes (fragmenting, developing, mixing, and extracting). Gestão-criação: processos indissociáveis nas práticas de um teatro baiano

Eduardo Paes Barreto Davel; Luiz Gustavo Libório Vianna

Management and creation have been historically, implicitly and traditionally considered antagonistic processes. Whereas management is often defined as organizing and control process, creation is commonly understood as a process involving difference and disorder in order to achieve something new. This research seeks to provide us with knowledge for reconsidering this antagonistic situation. Thus, we examine the relationship between management and creation in the context of working practices in a theatre. As we analyze systematically these practices capitalizing on self-ethnographic method, we conclude that management and creation are inseparable processes in practice. Implications occasioned by this inseparability are presented and discussed under organizational theory enlightenment.

Desafios da corporalidade na pesquisa acadêmica

Maria Tereza Flores-Pereira; Eduardo Paes Barreto Davel; Dóris Dornelles de Almeida

The main goal of this research is to explore, discuss and map the challenges of embodiment to research methodology. Consequently, the paper follows the qualitative tradition, focusing on the activities of interpretation, exploration and description. Two sources of information are highlighted: documents (embodiment researches published as thesis, dissertation, article, book and book chapters) and interviews with scholars specialized in embodiment. The result of this research is materialized in the formulation, description and discussion of nine challenges, issued from embodiment in the context of the research methodology. These challenges are organized from three key moments in the methodological process: (a) research planning, (b) interaction with empirical material and (c) analysis of empirical material. Furthermore, ethnography appears to be the methodological approach used by scholars.
