Objective: To analyze body satisfaction among students and its possible associations with nutritional status, sociodemographic factors, life style and health perception. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled students aged 15 to 20 years of public schools from the city of Caruaru, Northeast Brazil. Anthropometric, socio-demographic, life style and health perception, sleep, stress and body image variables were evaluated. The body mass index for gender and age was used to diagnose underweight, and overweight according to Conde and Monteiro (2006). Binary logistic regression was applied with the occurrence of “dissatisfaction with thinness” and “dissatisfaction with excess weight” as outcomes. Results: 594 students (62% females) aged 17.5±1.6 years old were studied. A proportion of 38.7% (95%CI 34.8-42.7) were satisfied with their body weight, while 31.3% (95%CI 27.6-35.2) would like to increase it and 30.0% (95%CI 26.333.8) would like to reduce it. The students who were satisfied with their weight ate at least five servings of vegetables/day, three or more meals/day, and they had a positive perception Endereco para correspondencia: Eduila Maria C. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a prevalencia de complicacoes gastrointestinais e a adequacao calorico-proteica de pacientes criticos em uso de terapia de nutricao enteral.

To investigate the prevalence and factors associated with overweight and obesity among public high school students of Caruaru, Northeast Brazil. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, with a representative sample. The study evaluated anthropometric (weight and height), socio-demographic and economic variables (gender, age, marital status, place of residence, family income and school grade) and those related with lifestyle (physical activity, sedentary behavior, dietary intake, stress levels, smoking, alcohol consumption and quality of sleep). Binary logistic regression was conducted, considering overweight and obesity as the main outcomes, being significant p<0.05. RESULTS: The final sample consisted of 600 students (62.5% females), with a mean age of 17.5±1.6 years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 19.0% (95%CI 15.9-22.4) and 5.5% (95%CI 3.8-7.7), respectively, without differences between genders. The proportion of overweight was higher among those who reported a negative perception of stress, those with insufficient physical activities, and the individuals who reported alcohol consumption. There was a higher proportion of obesity among the students with a negative perception of sleep, those with insufficient physical activities, and those who reported watching TV more than three hours per day and having candies four times or more per week. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity associated with modifiable risk factors such as physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, negative perception of sleep, time in front of TV greater than three hours per day and consumption of candies four times or more per week.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the nutritional effect of correcting metabolic acidosis in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: Twenty patients with metabolic acidosis, defined as mean serum bicarbonate < 22 mEq/L before dialysis, were studied for six months. They had been on dialysis for at least six months, with 35 mEq/L of bicarbonate in the dialysate. Metabolic acidosis was corrected through elevation in dialysate bicarbonate to values not exceeding 40 mEq/L, aiming at bicarbonate serum levels between 22 and 26 mEq/L. Biochemical, anthropometric, and dietary assessments were performed at the beginning and end of the study, as was Global Subjective Assessment (GSA). RESULTS: The nutritional assessment in the initial phase of the study showed normal body mass index (24.23 ± 3.83 kg/m2). However, according to arm muscle circumference, triceps skinfold, and GSA, men and women were classified as undernourished. Calorie and protein intakes were 29.7 ± 10.1 kcal/kg/day and 1.31 ± 0.35 g/kg/day, respectively. The biochemical evaluation showed normal serum albumin and low cholesterol. After correction, serum bicarbonate and pH increased from 18.2 ± 1.64 to 22 ± 1.70 (p < 0.001) and from 7.32 ± 0.45 to 7.37 ± 0.41 (p < 0.001), respectively. GSA improved (21.7 ± 6.4 versus 16.8 ± 6.6, p < 0.001) and calorie intake increased (1892 ± 454.30 versus 2110.30 ± 869.24, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Bicarbonate supplementation in hemodialysis solution was effective for correcting metabolic acidosis, determining an increase in calorie intake and improvement in GSA scores.
