Evaluation of partially loaded systems is reviewed through experimental verifications. Considering the effects of the newly added signals during upgrade, allocation of dummy lights, replacement of dummy lights and interaction of inter-channels are discussed.

The capacity upgrade from 20 Gbit/s to 160 Gbit/s in a WDM submarine cable system has been designed based on the experimental study of the dependency of the repeater output power and the number of wavelength.

We have transmitted 32 /spl times/ 11.4 Gbit/s signals over 4000 km using 200 km spans with pump power applicable for undersea cable systems. We believe that the result shows the feasibility of the 200 km spans for undersea cable systems.

We compare tolerance to self phase modulation (SPM) and cross phase modulation (XPM) of CS-RZ DPSK signals and CS-RZ OOK signals experimentally. The advantage of DPSK could be maintained after 7200 km transmission using dispersion management fiber (DMF) spans of 150 km and Raman assisted EDFA.

We have demonstrated a record-breaking capacity repeaterless transmission experiment. 1T bit/s transmission over 200 km was achieved with densely WDM signals and Raman amplification.
