BRS Ana: cultivar de batata de duplo propósito

The genotype BRS Ana is a new potato cultivar adequate for French fries, with potential for processing into frozen French fries and flakes, released in 2007. It was developed by the Embrapa Potato Breeding Program (Embrapa Temperate Agriculture, Pelotas-RS; Embrapa Transference of Technology, Office of Canoinhas-SC; and Embrapa Vegetables, Brasilia-DF), based on tuber appearance and yield, specific gravity and French fries quality. Tubers are red-skinned, lightly rough, oval shaped with shallow eyes. The pulp is white. Cultivar BRS Ana has high yield potential. In the subtropical ecosystem, cultivar BRS Ana showed higher yield (31.2 t ha-1) than the most used cultivars in Brazil when grown in autumn, and did not differ from them in the spring. In the tropical ecosystem, under irrigation, BRS Ana did not differ from both control cultivars. It produced higher percentage of marketable tubers (55.6%) and average tuber weight (108.4 g) than the controls in the fall crop of subtropical ecosystem. In both ecosystems, cultivar BRS Ana presented high specific gravity (1.086) and dry matter content (19.7%). The sensorial analysis showed that cultivar BRS Ana is adequate for home made French fries as well as for industrial processing. It is moderately susceptible to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and presents good resistance to early blight (Alternaria solani). The reaction to the tuber soft rot (Pectobacterium sp.) is similar to the most used cultivars. It has low seed degeneration conferred by moderate resistance to PVY and low incidence of PLRV. Susceptibility to tuber physiological disorders has not been observed. It seems that BRS Ana has lower fertilizer and water requirements than the most planted cultivars, meaning reduction of crop cost and risk. In the subtropical ecosystem, tuberization starts later in spring, therefore BRS Ana should be planted earlier in the season.

Métodos de proteção de mudas de abacate contra geada em diferentes cultivares

The experiment was carried out at EMBRAPA Technology Transfer Office at Canoinhas, Santa Catarina State, Northern Highland area. The aim was to evaluate the tolerance for low temperature in eight varieties of avocado (Choquette, Vitoria, Herculano, Quintal, Linda, Tonnage, Fuerte and Ryan) planted in May of 2003 using two methods of covers for avocado maiden trees (eucalyptus branches and eucalyptus branches plus sombrite). In September, in the same year, the covers were removed and ranked by scores to evaluate the degree of frost injury on plants. There were no difference between avocado varieties in relation of covers methods. However, comparing the two covers methods, the use of eucalyptus branches plus sombrite was better than the use of eucalyptus branches, in young plants of avocado.

Influência da proteção do enxerto na produção de mudas de abacate

O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar dois tipos de protecao do enxerto na producao de mudas de abacateiro cv. Herculano. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dois tratamentos (T1: protecao do enxerto com saco de polietileno; T2: protecao do enxerto com parafilme) e seis repeticoes. As avaliacoes foram feitas apos cinco meses da enxertia, nas quais foram determinadas as seguintes caracteristicas: pegamento do enxerto, comprimento e diâmetro das brotacoes. A utilizacao de parafilme como protecao do enxerto aumentou o pegamento na enxertia.

BRS Eliza: cultivar de batata para mesa, com película lisa e resistência à pinta-preta e à requeima

BRS Eliza is a tablestock potato cultivar released in 2001, by Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas, Brazil. It is adequate for puree and salad. Maturity is medium early. Tubers are oval shaped, yellow and smooth skin, low sensitivity to greening, yellow clear flesh and shallow eyes. BRS Eliza did not show physiological defects on the tubers. Has a good field resistance to late (Phytophthora infestans) and early blight (Alternaria solani), and medium resistance to main viroses. BRS Eliza is susceptible to black leg (Erwinia carotovora). It produces a high percentage of commercial tubers. Must be marketed immediately after harvesting. It requires accurate seed management in storage.
