This paper analyzes the information literacy competences of Swiss Library and Information Science students, in the context of the international Information Literacy Survey, supervised by the Department of Information Science at Hacettepe University of Ankara. The study has been conducted by the Department of Information Science at the University of Applied Sciences in Geneva in collaboration with the Information Science Department at the University of Applied Sciences in Chur. For this study, a very small convenience sampling method has been used. Therefore, the findings are not representative for the basic population of all LIS bachelor students in Switzerland, but refer only to the respondents.

RODIN is a tool for user-defined federated search and the simultaneous exploration of the web of documents and the Semantic Web. The system combines a widget aggregation approach for general web resources with an ontology matching approach for Linked Open Data. The project is part of the E-lib.ch-project (www.e-lib.ch), the Swiss initiative for building a single-point-of-access digital library for Switzerland. Within this context, RODIN was basically designed as an innovative and alternative information portal approach for digital libraries that neither depends on indexing as do common search engines nor relies on harvesting approaches as many library information systems do.

In this paper, we will analyze and discuss the quality of a project course with an international, collaborative and online format, whose content touches all Swiss information literacy standards. The analysis on a micro-level shall illuminate if the course setup can be declared as a more comprehensive teaching method for LIS students, than the simple teacher- or classroom- centered education.

This paper describes a lightweight approach to build an environment for scientific research that connects user-selected information resources with domain specific ontologies and the linked open data cloud. Search results are converted into RDF triples to match with ontology subjects in order to derive relevant subjects and to find related documents in external repositories data that are stored in the Linked Open Data Cloud. With the help of this deterministic algorithm for analyzing and ranking search subjects, the explicit searching process, as effectuated by the user, is implicitly supported by the LOD- technology.
