AbstractIn collecting material for her “Life of Charlotte Bronte,” Mrs. Gaskell accepted as true many slanderous reports in respect of the Rev. Patrick Bronte which had no more basis of fact than idle village gossip and the spite of a day-nurse who had been discharged from Haworth Parsonage. The first two editions of the “Life” contained passages in which these reports were given, credence.
